  1. Mid-Year Updates from the School Nurse Notes from the Nurse Words of Wisdom As you all know, wherever there are children gathered together, so to is the possibility for there to be transmission of germs. So far this school year we have seen cases of Strep Throat, Influenza, Lice as well as a Stomach Virus. In order that we all do our part in maintaining a healthy environment for everyone, please take this opportunity to review a few “Health Tips” with your children. The tips below are specific to germs that we have seen most commonly on campus. I am here to support you as we work together. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. LOVETT WELLNESS WARRIORS Lovett Wellness Warriors • PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF HEAD LICE • Do not share coats, hats, combs or hair accessories. • Do not play with their friends hair or hair ornaments. • Do not share pillows or blankets. • If you notice your child scratching their head persistently, please check them for the presence of nits (eggs) or lice ( live bugs). • HISD Policy indicates that students must be treated prior to returning to school. • Treatment is recommended on a regular basis for at least 6 to 8 weeks. • HISD health and wellness guidelines indicates that only children referred to the clinic will be checked; we will not conduct checks on an entire class • For more information on head lice visit The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or U.S National Library of Medicine; both have extensive information on the topic. • PREVENTING STREP AND INFLUENZA AND STOMACH VIRUSES • Good Hand washing Techniqueis the #1 prevention strategy. Although some persons use hand sanitizer, it is always best to use soap and water when available. • You should always wash your hands before you eat and after using the restroom, to clean cuts and after playing outside. • Remember to cough and /or sneeze into the bend of your elbow. This will help contain the spread of germs. • Do not share eating utensils, straws or napkins at lunch. • Utilize a tissue to blow your nose and then dispose of it in the trash. Remember to wash your hands afterwards. • If your child has a fever, they should not return to school until they are fever-free for 24hours without taking medicine.
