The roman republic consisted of two social classes the patricians and the plebians. The PATRICIANS • were the wealthy land owners that descended from the early settlers of Rome. Under the roman law only the patricians had held the most important positions in the army and I n the Roman religious life.
The Romans had discovered the third Etruscan king Named TarquiniusSuperbus was different from the Earlier kings.The and his sons ignored the needs of the People and have committed terrible crimes that were against the Romans.For over 20 years noone dared to stand up to them, then finally in 509 b.c. two Romans named Brutus and Collatinus made an effort to overthrow the king.They all forced TarquinuisSuperbus and his family out of Rome.All the Romans suffered under this tyrant and did not want another king.All the Roman people wanted was a government in which no individual could gain all the total power.For a start they elected Collatinus and Brutus to lead them for one year.Tarquinius in the mean time plotted to try to regain the throne.Brutus’s sons had planned to betray their father to help Tarquinuis ,but Brutus discovered the plot and sentenced his son’s to death .This action showed that Brutus was determined to protect rome from trranny.The Etruscan soldiers had rome attacked so Tarquinuis could return to the throne.The Romans defeated them ,but Brutus had died in battle.Tarquinuis finally allied himself with some 30 latin cities in the area around Rome and then attacked again ,the Romans won once more.According to the legend Castor and Pollux the twin gods mounted white horses and saved the day for the Romans and the Romans built a temple in their honor in the Forum.
THE PLEBIANS AND THE PATRICIANS • The plebeians are included in all of the roman citizens except for the patricians. The plebeians were soldiers, farmers, Craft workers and also merchants. Slaves and those people born outside of Rome could not be part of either of these classes. The hostile tribes had wars them against that surrounded Romes republics early years. The plebeians had to leave their farms to fight. When they had returned they had often found their homes and crops destroyed by the enemies. To start over they had to borrow money from the wealthy patricians. If they could not repay them they would be either in prison or they would be enslaved. The plebeians, you could imagine how they felt and they risked their lives in the battle to save the land of Rome,But ended poor than before. In 494 B.C. The plebeians took peaceful action by just refusing to fight in the Romans army. This was a very very wise strategy or a plan because all of the patricians soon realized that Rome could not survive without the farmers and the soldiers which were the plebeians. The patricians canceled the dept of the plebeians if they could not afford to pay them up. The plebeians had also gains the right to elect leaders called tribunes could veto any law unfair to the plebeians.In 450 B.C. The laws were recorded on bronze tablets that became known as the 12 tables
Tarquinius is no longer in power.The Romans started a new kind of government .In 509 b.c. they ended the monarchy and created a republic which is when citizens elect leaders to represent them.The new Roman government was called a tripartite meaning it had three parts.By dividing into parts.There was a System of checks ,balances or separation of powers that limited the power of each part of the government.the first part was the consuls ,which who replaced the King.The Romans decided to have two consuls so noone would have too much power.They all decided they would elect consuls everyyear.These consuls were the most powerful leaders in the Republic ,but did not have as much power as the Kings had.The authority of the consuls was very limited and clearly defined.They led the army ,carried out laws and acted as judges.
