Keep your Eye on the Ball and Use “Fast Feet” • Always keep your eye on the ball • Do not be distracted by what is around you • Stay on the balls of your toes • Bounce in between each shot and/ or points • Never keep your feet planted on the ground
How to Hit a Groundstroke Forehand • Hold the racket in your dominant hand (the hand you write with) toward the bottom of the racket grip • Stand on the service line facing sideways with your racket down below your waist • Have your knees bent a little bit and try to stay on the balls of your toes • When the ball comes over the net, allow for it to bounce one time then swing and make sure to follow through all the way over the opposite shoulder (the side of your body not holding the racket) • When you are about to swing, take a step forward and hit the ball when it is in front of your body
How to Hit a Groundstroke Backhand • Very similar to forehand • Stand on the service line facing the side of your less dominant hand • Hold racket in less dominant hand at the bottom of the grip with dominant hand right underneath the less dominant hand • Have your knees bent a little bit and stay on the balls of your feet • Racket down below your waist • when the ball is coming, allow it to bounce once then take a stop forward and swing through the ball • Make sure you hit the ball when it is in front of you, not when it is at your body
How to Volley • Volley is different than groundstrokes • When you volley, you are taking the ball out of the air, instead of hitting it after one bounce • Hold the racket in front of your face while standing close to the net • Make sure you keep your arm straight and don’t let the racket drop toward the ground • Stay on the balls of your feet, and bend your knees • Do not slouch down with your upper body, bending your knees is very important for this shot
How to Hit a Serve • Serves are done from the baseline in competition • Most challenging shot for beginners, but that is okay • Start with racket in dominant hand and ball in the other hand (racket can be held in a bent arm behind your head/back • Stand with feet body width apart • Toss ball into the air • Make sure you are reaching up to the ball when you swing your racket • Follow through into the court with racket crossing over the other side of the body
