Scope • Enterprises employing more than 10 employees in selected NACE Rev. 2 categories (‘core coverage’) • mining and quarrying (NACE 05-09) • manufacturing (NACE 10-33) • electricity, gas steam and air conditioning supply (NACE 35) • water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities (NACE 36-39) • wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (NACE 46) • transportation and storage (NACE 49-53) • publishing activities (NACE 58) • telecommunications (NACE 61) • computer programming, consultancy and related activities (NACE 62) • information services activities (NACE 63) • financial and insurance activities (NACE 64-66) • architectural and engineering activities; technical testing and analysis (NACE 71) Excluded are public sector, health, education and some less innovative activities (mainly in services) Community Innovation Survey, Veijo Ritola G6

Harmonised survey questionnaire… • Recommendation, not obligation - but widely used • Prepared by Eurostat in close cooperation with Member States • In English language only (with some multilingual testing) • CIS 2010, mandatory/voluntary questions in share 50/50 • Includes the necessary coding for final tabulation / aggregation Community Innovation Survey, Veijo Ritola G6

  6. …Harmonised survey questionnaire • An example on different treatment: • eco-innovation module in CIS 2010 did not include direct filtering whether enterprise was an innovator or not • however some Member States used filtering in national questionnaires • several non-filtering Member States reported having received positive replies from non-innovators for eco-innovation module SOLUTION: for the sake of comparable aggregated data, Eurostat asked the eco-innovation module to be ex-post filtered with innovators only Community Innovation Survey, Veijo Ritola G6
