  1. DEISA (www.deisa.org) • Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications • Initiative conducted by European national HPC centres in partnership with technology provider organizations, user groups in science and technology, R&D grid projects, etc. • Main purpose : deploy and operate a production quality, distributed supercomputing facility (the European analogue of TeraGrid). Use dedicated high bandwidth network infrastructures to deeply integrate seven high performance national supercomputers. Aggregate computing power will be reaching 28 Tf ends of 2003. • Core partners : EPCC (UK), FZJ (Julich, Germany), RZG (Garching, Germany), CINECA (Italy), CSC (Finland), IDRIS (France), CSCS (Switzerland) • Other associate partners: SARA (Netherlands), CEPBA (Spain), IBM, ongoing discussions with ECMWF and DKRZ. They contribute to grid services like global data managment, and to complementary R&D. Large users communities in climate modelling and environment, material sciences, cosmology and astrophysics, genomics, etc. • Major focus is European computational science. The project will break new ground by building and operating a facility that adds value to huge national investments, and which does not exist in Europe. • Top – bottom approach for IT systems integration.

  2. DEISA (www.deisa.org) • Core project : • Building and operating a production quality distributed facility, by providing single system image of a homogeneous supercluster as well as global data managment at a continental scale. • Technical teams (Middleware, Global Data Managment, Network) already constituted and starting evaluations (example: evaluation of global data managment software installed on two sites, Garching and IDRIS). • DEISA intends to develop significant experience and know how on the use of middlewares for the integration of production systems. • DEISA will support users and their applications through additional technical teams.. • Extended activities : • Interface the distributed terascale facility with the complementary high-end systems and servers for science and technology in Europe(heterogeneous grid) • Carry out specific actions and services for specific users communities. Other HPC centers want to share global data managment with DEISA. • R&D on specific subjects, and cooperation with other grid R&D projects • Platform for deployment of new European grid technologies..
