  1. How to Write a Manuscript and Get It Published in European Urology Why publishing (and publishing in European Urology) is important for you Christian Gratzke Associate Editor European Urology

  2. „Including a list of published materials shows that you are considered an expert in your field.“ Judy Friedler, CareerPro International

  3. Reasons to publish Science – To spread your results To improve the „infrastructure“ of your scientific work (grants, funding, prizes etc) Scientific Career Success

  4. Publication output – Indicative of better education?

  5. Aim: To assess the predictors of residents’ pursuit of fellowship training by surveying current urology residents and recent graduates. (Not important: debt load, age, marital status, and a desire to pursue a career in academic medicine) Freilich et al Urology 2011 Nov;78(5):986-92.

  6. Aim: To quantify and determine predictive factors for resident manuscript production „While the majority of residents are not involved in publication before residency, most submit and publish at least 1 manuscript as first author in a peer reviewed journal during residency. The number of prior publications and months of allotted research time are significantly predictive of resident manuscript productivity. In turn, manuscript submission is indicative of the decision to pursue fellowship training.“ Hellenthal et al J Urol 2009, 181, 281-287

  7. Iqbal et al, Am J Obstet Gynecol 2014

  8. Publication output – Indicative of future academic achievement?

  9. Aim: To evaluate resident productivity, as measured by peer reviewed publication output, and determined its relation to future publication output as junior faculty. Yang et al J Urol 2011, Vol. 185, 642-646

  10. Aim: To evaluate resident productivity, as measured by peer reviewed publication output, and determined its relation to future publication output as junior faculty. Conclusion: Publication output correlated with increasing dedicated research time and was associated with the pursuit of fellowship training and an academic career. Publication during residency predicted future academic achievement. Yang et al J Urol 2011, Vol. 185, 642-646

  11. Aim: To compare the publication records, academic promotions, and leadership appointments of women and men physicians longitudinally throughout academic careers Reed et al Acad Med. 2011;86:43–47.

  12. Aim: To compare the publication records, academic promotions, and leadership appointments of women and men physicians longitudinally throughout academic careers Reed et al Acad Med. 2011;86:43–47.

  13. Aim: To compare the publication records, academic promotions, and leadership appointments of women and men physicians longitudinally throughout academic careers Conclusions: Women's publication rates increase and actually exceed those of men in the late stages of careers, yet women hold fewer leadership positions than men overall, suggesting that academic productivity assessed midcareer may not be an appropriate measure of leadership skills and that factors other than publication record and academic rank should be considered in selecting leaders. Reed et al Acad Med. 2011;86:43–47.

  14. So why is publishing in Eur Urol important for you? #1!

  15. So why is publishing in Eur Urol important for you? #1!

  16. Publication output – Don´t get frustrated - do it wisely!

  17. Online survey inviting all medical professors (n = 1206) of the 8 academic medical centres in The Netherlands Tijdink et al, PLOS One 2013

  18. Tijdink et al, PLOS One 2013

  19. A substantial proportion of medical professors believe that publication pressure has become excessive, and have a cynical view on the validity of medical science. These perceptions are statistically correlated to burn out symptoms (24%!). Further research should address the effects of publication pressure in more detail and identify alternative ways to stimulate the quality of medical science. Tijdink et al, PLOS One 2013

  20. Publication output – It matters!

  21. Avedis Donabedian 1966 Quality of medical care can be quantitated through three domains: Structure (nurse staffing, availability of desired technologies, patient volume) Outcomes (mortality, adverse patient events) Process (reputation – survey of 250 urologists)

  25. Conclusions: • Publications are important when seeking an academic scientific career • Quality matters most, not quantity • European Urology is currently the highest ranked surgical journal and has set the standards
