About me Why I got involved with DrinkLocal: A movement to reduce plastic bottle usage in schools
DrinkLocal Past Accomplishments • Over 180 filtered bottle filling stations on campus: • Residential college dorms • Athletic buildings • Academic & administrative buildings • Freshmen receive water bottles during move-in In-wall and tall spout filling stations
Our work this year Buildings survey • previously, only some station locations were available per building • verified exact locations of filling stations; full detailed list available at sustain.princeton.edu/involved/drinklocal Awareness • labeled filling stations with “Filtered Water” stickers • attached “These come from trees” stickers to paper towel dispensers in bathrooms and kitchens to reduce waste
DrinkLocal Survey Results 8 questions about sustainability at Princeton (200+ responses) • gauge awareness of filtered water filling stations • determine importance of DrinkLocal water bottles Did you receive a bottle as a freshman? If yes, do you still have your bottle? same as last year same as last year
How frequently do you… Use a DrinkLocal water bottle? Use other reusable water bottle? 18% 19% 21% 42% 69% 10% 5% 16% Did you know there are more than 180 bottle filling stations on campus? Did you know that the water is filtered? 68% 32% 41% 59% -10% -10%

Help us decide how to best invest our resources to effectively promote sustainability on campus… No Yes same as last year Reusable bottles ($12 each) are WORTH the investment and the University SHOULD continue to provide them to all freshmen: 88% Reusable bottles ($12 each) are NOT WORTH the investment and the university SHOULD NOT continue to provide them to all freshmen: 12%
Some responses “They're worth the investment - even though not everyone uses them, I still see a significant number being widely used around campus. The savings from even just one person using a reusable bottle rather than bottled water for their 4 years here are significant.” “They would be even more worthwhile if students were more frequently reminded of the filtered water stations.” “By handing them out to freshmen, it serves as a publicity act because more people will see these water bottles and it will become a norm to use them.”
Feedback on selling disposable plastic bottles 16% 43% No Yes 40% Should Princeton sell disposable bottled water?
Future Plans • Nassau Hall is getting new in-wall stations • Awareness campaign and labeling stations more clearly • Map of stations with building foorplans
