  1. Lesson 3 – Dangerous Microbes Understand that some microbes are harmful. Know certain infectious diseases are linked to bacteria, fungi and viruses.

  2. Useful words for this lesson. • Symptoms – the way that a disease or infection makes us feel. These are the physical side effects of a disease. • Treatments – the measure taken to lessen the effects of the symptoms, destroy the infection and make us feel better.

  3. Dangerous Microbes: Fungi • Many microbes can cause diseases. For example here are some diseases caused by fungi: Athlete's foot Oral thrush Symptoms of fungal infections itchiness and soreness. They can be treated with creams and antibiotics and keeping areas of the body clean and dry.

  4. Explanation of the symptoms • Itchiness – this is caused by the fungi breaking down the skin. • Soreness – often caused by scratching the infected area until the skin breaks. • Smelly!!! – like all living organisms, fungi produce waste that can often smell.

  5. Dangerous Microbes: Bacteria • Here are some diseases caused by bacteria: • Tuberculosis or TB is a bacteria that affects the lungs. It used to be deadly!!

  6. Salmonella causes food poisoning. • Symptoms of infections from salmonella can result in severe stomach pains, sickness and diarrhea!! • Treatments come in the form of antibiotics.

  7. Explanation of the symptoms • As we know from the previous lesson, bacteria reproduce very quickly. • Like all living organisms, they produce waste products called toxins that can poison us making us sick. • Their rapid growth can also cause swelling in tissues which can damage cells and be very painful.

  8. Dangerous Microbes: Viruses • Measles • Measles results in an itchy rash and often makes you feel tired and sick.

  9. The Flu Virus • Symptoms: headache, sore muscles, coughing and sneezing • Treatment: Vaccines (before infection) or painkillers if infected.

  10. Spreading diseases • Many harmful microbes can pass from one person to another. Diseases caused by such microbes are said to be infectious diseases. • Infectious diseases can be spread by: • Air • Water • Touch • Food

  11. Air • Sneezing releases millions of viruses into the air. • They stay airborne until the are breathed in by another host. • TB and the flu are spread this way.

  12. Water • Cholera is bacterial infection caused when a person drinks contaminated water. Water is treated with chlorine to kill the bacteria

  13. Food • Some bacteria like salmonella, and fungus thrive on our food causing it to `go off` and possibly causing diseases. • Microbes love moist warm conditions so their affects can be slowed by freezing food. • Cooking food also kills microbes preventing us from getting infected.

  14. Touch Many microbial infections are passed through touch. Athletes foot can be passed on from the floor that an infected person has stepped on.
