Problem • The problem that Roosevelt Middle School is experiencing and needs to be resolved is an increase in negative student behavior leading up to referrals, detentions and suspensions. Negative behaviors include but are not limited to classroom disruptions, the use of profanity, and refusing to comply with faculty direction. The problem appears to be the direct result of the lack of a comprehensive school wide discipline plan.
Goal of Action Research • The intended goal of the action research intervention is to reduce the occurrence of referrals, detentions, and suspensions. To facilitate the decrease, the action research team co-constructed a grade-level discipline plan. The goal of the new discipline plan is to create an environment where all staff, students, and parents are presented with a clear guideline of behavior as well as consequences for not following guidelines.
Data Gathered for Action Research • Data collected for the action research project included surveys created by researcher and front office logs from previous administration.
Data Analysis Pre-Intervention Data • Surveys revealed that teachers felt they had to take behavior matters into their own hands. It also revealed that teachers were placing the blame for referral, detention, and suspension increase on administrators. • Data received from previous years’ front office discipline logs revealed that the number of students sent out of the classroom for disciplinary issues was lower. Mid-Intervention Data • Data will be collected and discussed after students released for the end of the 2013-2014 school year. Informal data received from informal interviews and observations revealed a decrease in 6th grade office referrals, detentions, and suspensions.
Alternatives Considered To address the escalating discipline problems, referrals, detentions, and suspensions, two alternatives were considered: • Re-implementing a school Dean position to deal with the increase of negative behavior plaguing Roosevelt Middle School. • Bringing in an outside company “PlascoTrac” to implement PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support).
Furthering Action Research (Next Steps) The onset of the action research study was to create a discipline plan to address an increase in negative student behavior. The study was downsized from an entire school site to the 6th grade population. The next steps of the action research study include: • Collect final data • Evaluate the effects of the interventionand make changes/adjustments necessary. • Evaluate and consider the campus wide roll out of the discipline plan at the onset of the 2014-2015 school year.
