  4. Number Talks The purpose of NUMBER TALKS is to strengthen students’ reasoning skills and to help them make sense of numbers and number operations.

  5. Number Talks Let’s see a Number Talk in action! 2nd grade class 7th grade class

  6. Number Talks Jigsaw • At your table, get in groups of 4. • Each person takes one card from the set. • Go to the corner that matches your card. • In your card group, talk about the ways students might solve your card problem. Also discuss how you would record their responses to your prompt. • As a group, practice how you would record student thinking. • At the signal, go back to your original table group. You will each present your number talk to the other three.

  7. Number Talks Jigsaw • Now, go back to your card group and discuss what worked, what was difficult. • Be ready to share with the larger group. • Major Components of Number Sense • Building Facility with Numbers

  8. Practice Makes Perfect • Decide on which Number talk to do with your students • Record strategies to share next time
