  4. Let’s Get Started With Assessment Building! • Now that you have become familiar with the Dashboard, we are going to begin building a practice math assessment. • First, I am assigning you to a work group in order to collaborate and support each other. You will create your own assessments, but you will be able to share ideas with each other and ask questions. • I am going to pass out your assessment creation challenge packets. Within these packets you will find the names of your team members and the specific math standards you will use to build your practice assessments. These packets also contain the complete sequence of assessment building steps for you to keep and refer to whenever you need them. • Once you have located your team members, please rearrange your seating, introduce yourselves to your team, and look over your individualized set of standards. Now that you are all settled, please click on the Assessments tab in in the menu bar.

  5. First decisions • When you click on Assessments, this is the window that will appear: • Select Create a new assessment from the bulleted list of options. • Then, from the next window, select Item Bank and click Okay.

  6. Name Your Assessment • On the new page that opens, you are prompted to name your assessment. Type the name of your assessment in field provided (ex.Gr. 3 Equal Groups). Click Create. • You have the option to describe your assessment more fully with a description and tags – this can be useful to refer to when you reflect upon the assessments you have given, or you wish to pinpoint evidence of student progress, but this is not necessary in order to continue creating.

  7. Select the standards you will be assessing • A new page opens prompting the selection of standards, assessment subject, and grade level. Select Virginia Standards of Learning from left drop down menu. • Then select the subject you are assessing from the middle drop down menu. For today’s instruction, please choose math. For the grade level, today, please select grade 3. Once you have selected these, click Continue.

  8. Linking Standards to Assessment Items in Illuminate • The chosen standards will load at the bottom of the page in a bulleted list. You can expand the standard strands by clicking Expand All and reveal more specific description of skills addressed within each articulated standard. Number of items • In your assessment challenge packet, pre-selected standards have been chosen for you to work with. Locate those standards on Illuminate. Click on the number of assessment items linked to those standards – this action links available assessment items directly to your assessment. Once all desired standards are linked, click Continue on the right hand side of the page.

  9. Accessing the Albemarle Open Bank Filter • A new page, the Search Filters page opens. Now, click either Albemarle Open Bank or Search to load filtered assessment items.

  10. Viewing Assessment Items • All assessment items linked to your pre-selected standards will load in order for you to select the ones for your practice assessment. Scroll down the page to view the available assessment items. Click the Add button in the bottom right hand corner of each item to build your assessment. Once all desired items are selected, click Continue.

  11. Reviewing the Assessment You Created • A new page opens with chosen assessment items, numbered in order of selection. Look over the assessment you have created today. Add or delete items, if you wish. Once you are satisfied with the assessment items you have chosen, click Continue.

  12. Further Reviewing and Editing • A new page opens with chosen assessment items allowing reordering and further editing. You can explore how to reorder the assessment items you chose by clicking on small cross on right side of item box and drag where desired. When assessment order is satisfactory, click Continue.

  13. Printing Options • The Print Options page opens. This option is available if you are not administering the assessment online. Here is where you will format the hard copy of your assessment should this be the method for your students. • Keep in mind the ages of your students and how to best meet their developmental needs when creating the printable text booklets. Larger font sizes and more generous spacing make the assessment more kid-friendly.

  14. More About Printing . . . • Once you have selected the printing criteria, click Generate to create a pdf of the assessment. This pdf will automatically download and be available for you to print when you are ready to administer the assessment. • If, however, you are administering an online assessment, simply click Continue when this page opens. You will be able to locate this assessment by searching for it by name when you are ready to administer it.

  15. Publishing Your Assessment • Upon closing assessment booklet, you will return to Print Options page. Click Continue on right side of page. A new page, Publish Your Assessment will open. Please click Publish to prevent changes and to easily locate your assessments in the future. Assessments, once published, are easy to manage.
