  1. Food, Deserts, Swamps, Oh My!

  2. FOOD DESERTS • An urban area with little to no access to large grocery stores that provide fresh and whole foods to help maintain a healthy diet • Few small convenience and corner stores (little to no refrigeration) • Residents in food deserts are limited to the processed foods with little nutritional value

  3. FOOD SWAMPS • An area where the overabundance of high-energy foods overwhelms healthier food options • Where food deserts don't have many stores, and the only ones available are corner stores, food swamps are bombarded with fast-food places with little nutrition (such as McDonalds, Burger King, etc.) • More people live in Food Swamps than Food Deserts

  4. SURVEY - WHICH IS MORE APPETIZING??? A Wendy's Cheeseburger and chicken Sandwich Stir-Fry Vegetables

  5. SURVEY RESULTS • Wendy's --> 8 • Veggie's --> 2 • The Wendy's sandwiches are much more accessible for many people, and they look more appealing, and they're cheaper

  6. ABOUT THE FOOD • Wendy's Jr. Cheeseburger • Poor vitamin and mineral content • 6% of vitamin A and C, 34% of sodium, low amounts of Iron and Calcium, 7 grams of trans fat, 2 grams of fiber • water content: none

  7. ABOUT THE FOOD - CONTINUED • Vegetables • Corn, Lima Beans, Peas, Green Beans, Carrots • High Vitamin and Mineral Content Vitamins A, C, E, K, B6, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Selenium • Water Content: 164g

  8. NUTRITIONAL TARGET MAP Wendy's Jr. Cheeseburger Mixed Vegetables

  9. FOOD DESERT - SOLUTION Go to the government with plan for a grant that would add more fresh food stores with nutritious foods, with reasonable prices and accessible locations Also to enhance the current corner and convenient stores by providing better refrigeration, fresher foods coming in on a daily basis, and more nutritious snacks, such as granola bars, not things like Slim Jims

  10. FOOD SWAMP - SOLUTION Get the food distributors to lower their prices, allowing fresh food stores to lower prices, allowing people with a lower income to access more nutritious foods Also to add a law that says that a fast-food store may not be within eight miles from another Allows less reliance on fast-food stores being wherever you go and easy to get to
