  1. Welcome First Grade families to Curriculum Night! Thank you for joining us!

Reader’s Workshop - Dilworth uses the Common Core Standards as a guide to our Literacy components - Use a Balanced Literacy approach with a Reader’s Workshop - Team Planning - Differentiation Reading Workshop consists of: -Phonics/phonemic awareness -Fluency -Comprehension -Writing and reader response journals -Flexible grouping

  4. Writing Workshop - Dilworth will be using Lucy Caulkin’s model this year. Focus on being able to: - Generate ideas - Add details - Write different types of texts (narrative, persuasive, informational, how-to, all-about) Daily Writing Practice (DWP)

  5. Lunch & Recess - Check your child’s home room class for specific lunch times. - Students begin lunch with 10 minutes of quiet time in order to focus on eating their food. - Bring lunch or buying? - Parents are welcome to join for lunch; however this year they will need to sit at the “Visitors” table with their child, due to lack of extra room at the class tables. - Just a reminder that students are not to share food at lunch. - Check with your home room teacher about allergies. - Recess: at least 30 minutes each day - proper shoes required

Math - Dilworth uses Math Investigations and Kathy Richardson as the main curriculum guides for teaching math. - They both align with the common core standards - Math Workshop - Differentiation - Counting and number awareness - Addition and subtraction - Measuring and graphing - Geometry - Homework supports skills that are being practiced and learned in the classroom - Hands-on activities, word problems, computer games, iPad apps, teacher led differentiated groups

  7. Social Studies & Science Social Studies: History Geography Economics Culture Civics and Government Intertwined in other core content areas Science: Force and motion Properties of objects Earth systems Functions of living things Intertwined in other core content areas

  8. Homework - Math - weekly packet, due each Friday - Sunshine math (optional) - last page of the math packet - Reading Record - 30 minutes - Additional websites - Current Events

  9. Green Take Home Folder - Goes home nightly and is our main form of communication - Front clear pocket holds their behavior calendar - Back clear pocket contains their daily reading record - “Return to school” is for homework and forms that we need returned - “Keep at home” is for completed work and other communication that may stay at home - Each Wednesday all PTA and other school communication will come home in this same daily folder

Behavior Management - Green, yellow, and red behavior cards and clips - Each classroom has a separate incentive that ties into our school “On Fire Behavior” (marbles, drops, blue tickets) - Dragon Dollars are awarded for “on fire” behavior - Everyone starts each day on green. - At the end of the day, your child will use a crayon to color their behavior calendar, indicating their behavior for the day. - The teacher will write if they received clips, yellow, or red. - Please sign nightly and review with your child

Field Trips Possible Fall Field Trip Winter Field Trip - February 10th, Children’s Theater - PTA will cover the cost of all field trips this year. - Permission slips will be sent home approximately 2 weeks prior to each trip. - Chaperones will be requested as needed. All chaperones must be registered volunteers with CMS.

  12. Transportation - Please email or send a note with changes in transportation. - If you email changes, please copy Mrs. Lorenzo on the email. - Changes to transportation may not be made after 2:15.

  13. Contact - We can all be reached through email. - You can access each teacher's website on the Dilworth Faculty & Staff website.

  14. Room Parents - CMS/Volunteer/sign-up - Holiday parties - Etc.
