Kabuki • Originates in late 16th century (1596) • All female performers (immediately banned) • Replaced by male performers- includes “onnagata” (female impersonator) • Primarily dance theater w/ colorful costumes • Audience – traditionally middle-class • Music – includes three different ensembles
