Whitetail Deer CS255 By John Rowe
Categories: • Buck • Doe • Fawn
Buck: • Male • Has antlers • Generally larger than females • Sticks together with other bucks, except during rut
Doe: • Female • No antlers • Smaller than bucks • Travel in small groups of mature females
Fawn: • Baby deer • Male or female • Has white spots for camouflage when first born • They fade as the deer ages in the first few months • Males with little horns are called “button bucks”
Breeding and Rut Period • Generally happens late October into November • Rut can last 10 days to a month • Bucks spar with each other to see who is the most dominant buck • Bucks leave scrapes on the ground with their scent to attract other bucks to fight as well as doe’s
Breeding and Rut Period cont. • Bucks travel far and wide to find doe’s during the rut • Doe’s reach a 24 hour estrus period where the two deer will mate. • Seven months later a fawn will be born
Feeding • Whitetail deer tend to feed on shrubs, apples, and acorns. • They also tend to eat farmers crops too. • Some people feed the deer, but this is not recommended that much anymore due to the breakout of bovine tuberculosis in deer. • The close nose-to-nose contact allows the disease to be spread easily.
