Carbohydrates • Fuel that your body uses for energy • Carbohydrate: one of several substances such as sugar or starch • Complex -bread, crackers, pasta, and rice • Simple -white sugar, fruits, milk • 45-65% of your total daily calories come from carbohydrates. • the major source of energy
Fats • Fuels the body and helps absorb vitamins • Unsaturated fats -olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil, albacore tuna, and salmon. • Saturated fats -butter, cheese, and all milk except skim. • Trans fats - margarine, baked goods, fried foods • it should make up no more than 30% of our daily intake • 1 gram= 9 calories of energy
Protein • Protein: one of the many substances that is necessary for the body to grow and be strong • Complete - animal sources, such as meat and milk • Incomplete - vegetables • Sources: beef, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and legumes • 1 gram= 4 calories
Fibre • Fibre has no calories • One meal should consist of 2.5 to 4.9 grams of fibre • Found in most healthy foods • Types: - Soluble - Insoluble - Acacia • Sources: plants, fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes
Vitamins • Makes you strong and healthy • Vitamin A- helps with your eyesight - orange fruits and vegetables • Vitamin B- helps make energy for your body - green vegetables • Vitamin C- helps you heal - fruits and veggies, citrus fruits • Vitamin D- helps you have strong bones - milk, eggs • Vitamin E- protects your lungs from polluted air -grains, wheat, legumes
Minerals • Helps your body grow • certain substances necessary for the maintenance of life and good health. • Minerals are a good source of iron • Macro minerals • Trace minerals • Calcium- keeps your bones strong - dairy products • Iron- transports oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. - meat
Water • Without water your body wouldn’t work properly • Makes up most of your body weight • Every food contains some water • 70% of the human body is water • Water is composed of Hydrogen and Oxygen • the average person needs to drink six to eight cups of water daily • Types: - Salt water - Fresh water
