HUBRIS • Greek word for "arrogance or pride“ • Often leads to a character's demise (death). • Hubris is a negative: not just pride, but excessive pride and over-confidence. • Examples: Bill Gramatica (Cardinals field goal kicker) Not studying for a test because you think you’ll do well…and then failing

  3. JOURNAL 10/26/11 • Write about a time when you have shown HUBRIS. • Give details: Why were you overconfident? What happened? How did you feel afterwards? Could you give it a moral or lesson learned?

  4. ALLEGORY • A story that can be interpreted in two ways: 1) Literally -what is actually happening 2) Symbolically - what do certainelements of the story represent?

  7. The Tortoise and the Hare LEVEL 2 – SYMBOLIC INTERPRETATION TORTOISE – not rushing, consistent, doesn’t give up HARE – Overconfident, lazy, H______S MORAL - Slow and steady wins the race!

  10. The Masque of Red Death • Although it is most commonly mentioned in those times, still a problem today • WHO (World Health Organization) estimates 8 million a year have it, 2 million a year die from it
