  1. Pre-test Material Dump Everything you ought to know about the last month or so all in one convenient place

  2. Anatomy of the Test • There will be 3 or 4 (and I am leaning towards 4) multiple choice questions from unit 3. • That’s chapters 11 and 12. • There will then be 6 or 7 (and I am leaning towards 6) multiple choice questions from unit 2, for a total of 10 multiple choice questions. • Then there will be 2 free response questions, both from unit 2. • This is a change from my original statement that there would be one free response from each unit.

  3. Unit 3 Big Ideas • I recommend you know the four kinds of bias and what they really mean. • It also would not hurt to be able to identify what kind of bias a situation caused. • I recommend you know what random really means and what it does not really mean, and I recommend you do so really well, if you know what I mean.

  4. Unit 3 Big Ideas • I recommend you learn the difference between clustering and stratifying so you can break down a multistage sample by which parts were stratified and which parts were clustered. • Ex. If two boys and two girls are each selected out of 5 randomly chosen classes from each Elementary school in order to measure district 25, what was clustered and what was stratified?

  5. Unit 3 Big Ideas • I recommend you know the different types of sampling and how they rate. • Census = dumb • SRS = best, when possible • Stratified / Cluster = good when strata exist • Multistage = fun, meaning pain • Systematic = better than convenience or census • Convenience = the devil

  6. Unit 4 Big Ideas • You should know what correlation is and isn’t and can and cannot be. • You should be able to identify what kind of residual a person in a given situation should want, and why. • You should know all the possible things that a correlation of zero could mean. • You should know how to interpret r2 in the context of the data. • You should know how to find r from r2, including the sign. • You should know what could go wrong in a residual plot.

  7. Unit 4 Big Ideas • You should know what an extrapolation is, what an extrapolation isn’t, and you should know that extrapolations are bad. • If this is not a multiple choice question, it will be a part of one of the free response questions.

  8. Unit 4 Big Ideas • For one free response question you will need to know how to: • Find the regression equation using the means, standard deviations, and the correlation. • Use that equation to make an estimate. • Use that equation to find a residual. • Interpret the equation of the line. • Discuss the reasonability of the intercept.

  9. Unit 4 Big Ideas • For the other free response question you need to know how to: • Determine which variable should be the predictor and which should be the response. • Find the regression equation from the lists of data. • Sketch the residual plot. • Assess the residual plot. • Perform the square root and/or log transformation. • Assess the residual plots for the transformed graphs. • Find an estimate using the appropriate transformation.
