  1. What Makes a Mineral? Atoms make elements, which make Minerals!

  2. Minerals • The purist form of matter which is the building foundation of earth’s materials. Fluorite (CaF2)

  3. Scientific Definition of a Mineral • To be a mineral it must: • Form naturally • Be inorganically formed • Be in the solid phase • Have a definite chemical composition • Have an ordered atomic arrangement

  4. Formed Naturally? • Rocks and soil are made from minerals. • It is only a mineral if it was made by nature’s physical processes. • Some scientists have created “minerals” in a laboratory… Are these considered a mineral according to the definition of a mineral? NOPE!

  5. Formed by nature- Mineral Dioptase(CuSiO2(OH)2) my favorite!

  6. Formed in Laboratory- Imposter! • Bismuth

  7. inorganically formed? • Cannot be made from living things or the remains of living things. • Coal, a mineral or not? • Not a Mineral→

  8. Solid? • It is only a mineral if it is in the solid phase of matter:

  9. Definite chemical composition? • A Mineral’s chemistry is the elements that make up the minerals matter. • Minerals are either single elements or compounds.

  10. 92 Natural Elements:

  11. Single element mineral Chemical name • Gold (Au) Silver (Ag) • Sulfur (S)

  12. Compound Minerals Chemical Name • Quartz (SiO2) Potassium Feldspar(KAlSi3O8)

  13. Ordered Atomic Arrangement? • All minerals have crystals that form in patterns starting with the smallest atom. • The arrangement of these atoms makes geometric shapes
