Reinforcing Infrastructure withthe eotPACIComputational Science Resource Community http://www.edcenter.sdsu.edu/csrc/ Online Community-Building Kris Stewart, stewart@sdsu.eduJeff Sale, jsale@edcenter.sdsu.edu Mikhail Burstein, mikhail@edcenter.sdsu.edu SDSC GSM Dec. 13, 2000
Need for Online Community • Explosion of online computational science resources of varying quality, purpose, state of development, … • Useful to develop online repositories that are scaleable, searchable and dynamic(easy to update and add comments) • Faculty and their students need learning on demand assistance
Primary Goal Establish an online community to facilitate and encourage sharing and evaluation of computational science resources, usable in instruction.
Discipline Communities (peer reviewed) 12 more by the end of 2001 NPACI/CSU Collaboration California State University • National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure • National Computational Science Alliance • Education, Outreach and Training Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure OCSK Computational Science Resource Community eotPACI
Advancing the Infratructure (NPACI Theme Song) • Resources -- Today’s Digital Laboratory • High-performance computing available today to the academic community • Develop and Deploy • Technology and application collaborations to push the capabilities of tomorrow’s digital laboratory • Use and Apply • Computational scientists applying enhanced capabilities to achieve new scientific results • Disseminate and Incorporate • Incorporating technologies into the digital laboratory and disseminating them for use in new communities
The CSRC Interface Browse or Search Member profile page Home page
Based On Two Basic Objects:Members and Artifacts Members may… Artifacts are… • Submit Learning Artifacts • Authored by themselves • Authored by others • Submit User Comments • Submit Assignments • Create a personal and professional profile for others to browse • Register online easily to become “Member” • Technology learning objects • “Smaller” than a complete course • Submitted by Members • Browsable by anyone
CSRC Features and Functions • Supports user comments about specific resource • Searchable web-based repository of computational science resources with usage characterizations • Characterizations include details about the resource as it is used in research or education • Enhydra Java servlet interface to an Oracle database engine supports modularized component-based web page creation – part of the CDL design of the On-Line Community Starter Kit (basis of the CSRC)
