  2. What it's about: A rhythmic tale of piranhas that outmaneuver and eat each other, making this a fun and effective early lesson in subtraction (10-1, 9-1, 8-1, etc...). Finally, a crocodile comes along and "then there were none." Levels: Interest Level: Grades PreK-1 Difficulty Level: Ages 1-8

  3. What it's about: Another cute and educational MathStart book, this one aimed at teaching subtraction using the well- known party game 'musical chairs.' Bouncy rhymes and adorable monsters keep the mood light and fun. Levels: Interest Level: Grades 1-2 Reading Level: Ages 4-8 DRA Level: 16

  4. What it's about: Another zany math adventure from the Math is Categorical team of Brian Cleary and Brian Gable. Silly but educational rhyming text is paired with wacky cartoon cats and other animals. Together they teach about basic subtraction and provide ample instructive examples. Levels: Interest Level: Grades 1-4 Difficulty Level: Ages 6+

  5. What it's about: The Ocean City Sharks need to money to participate in the state swim meet, so a local bank offers to sponsor them if they swim 75 laps by the end of the week. To meet their challenge, they swim every day and use subtraction to figure out how many laps are left to go. The two digit subtraction problems gets more difficult as the book progresses. Levels: Interest Level: Grades 2-4 Reading Level: Ages 4-8 DRA Level: 24

  6. What it’s about: Counting down from twelve to zero, the reader learns about some of the fish on the Great Barrier Reef and the threats to their continued existence.

  7. What it’s about: A retelling of a traditional Liberian tale in which King Leopard invites all the animals to a spear-throwing contest whose winner will marry his daughter and succeed him as king.

  8. What it’s about: When a tiny chimpanzee is born prematurely at a Kansas zoo, and the mother shows no interest in her baby, a pediatrician comes in to care for the little chimp eventually named Jiggs. Readers can follow Jiggs as he grows from a wobbly infant to a wild and wonderful toddler. Along the way they learn about clocks, calendars, time lines, and other ways of keeping time records.
