  2. The Vietcong • Rebel Communist group in S. Vietnam that fought for N. Vietnam • Killed 1,000s of S. Vietnamese officials • Hated Ngo Dinh Diem, S. Vietnam’s president (Catholic & corrupt)

  3. Ho Chi Minh Trail – Ho Chi Minh supplied arms to the Vietcong with paths to S.V.

  4. Tonkin Gulf Resolution • The USS Maddox, fired at N. Vietnam ships in the Gulf of Tonkin after an alleged attack. • Pres. Johnson widened American involvement in Vietnam by signing the “TGR”

  5. Troop Buildup – 1965 to 1968 • General Westmoreland = American commander in S. Vietnam. • He said the SV Army (ARVN) needed an aggressive deployment of U.S. troops. 500,000 were sent by 1967.

  6. Attempting to expose Vietcong tunnels, U.S. planes dropped napalm, a gasoline-based bomb that set fire • Vietcong received supplies from China and the Soviets.

  7. Agent Orange • Herbicide used in American attacks on Vietnamese crops. • Ruined soil & water system – led to 1,000s of birth defects.

  8. 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities, and 500,000 children born with birth defects. The affected residents are living in sub-standard conditions with many genetic diseases. • The use of Agent Orange still has an effect on the citizens of Vietnam, poisoning their food chain and creating concern about its effect on human beings. This chemical has been reported to cause serious skin diseases as well as a vast variety of cancers in the lungs, larynx, and prostate. • Children in the areas where Agent Orange was used have been affected and have multiple health problems including cleft palate, mental retardation, hernias, and extra fingers and toes
