  2. “Once upon a time there was a little red-headed girl…” • Born in 1944, then moved onto her grandparents farm in Union City, Michigan. • parents divorced when she was 3, so she spent school year with her mother and the summers with her dad. Living with parents and grandparents was a magical time in her life. • Moved to California at age 8. Lived in a neighborhood full of neighbors who came in as many colors, ideas and religions as there are people on the planet. Met best friend, Stewart Washington, there.

  3. Stories come from Polacco’s past– her childhood… her ancestors’ lives… …Or from a corner of her mind’s imagination! 43 titles and still counting….

  4. FUN FACTS • Polacco didn’t learn to read until age 14; • She’s dyxlexic, disnumeric, and disgraphic, yet she obtained her PhD; • When she was a child in Michigan, a real meteor fell into her front yard! • Her family DID NOT OWN A T.V.!!! • She gets book ideas from her IMAGINATION.

  5. Words of Wisdom “Of course it’s true, but it may not have happened.” —Patricia Polacco’s grandmother “You probably have noticed that in almost every book that I write there is a very young person who is interacting with an elderly person. Personally, I feel that this is the most valuable experience of my life....having the wonder of knowing both children and elderly people. “ Patricia Polacco
