Biodiversity data centreContent and requirements • Contains Data and information on species, habitats and protected sites in Europe. • Species of the Nature Directives + Red Listed Species • Habitat types of the Nature Directives • Natura 2000 sites of Nature Directives + Nationally designated sites • Deriving from Priority Data flows of the BDC • EU reporting - Birds and Habitats Directives ( Natura 2000 sites, Article 17 -conservation status) • Nationally Designated Areas - at a Pan European level, for the UN list of protected areas • Main entry point : Biodiversity Data center Services http://eunis.eea.europa.eu/ http://natura2000.eea.europa.eu/# http://biodiversity.eionet.europa.eu/article17
Biodiversity data centreContent and requirements • Main functions • Data collation (e.g data flows related to Nature Directive, EEA priority data flows) • Data standardisation (e.g. taxonomic reference for species, EUNIS habitats classification, harmonized datasets allowing for cross border comparisons) • Data analysis (generation of statistics and indicators, i.e. SEBI) • Publication (e.g. easy and interactive access to biodiversity data, maps, graphs, tables) • With the support of ETC-BD and in cooperation with DGENV • BDC concept and operations clarified during 2008-2009
Biodiversity data centrePlans and challenges Overview of BDC work in 2010 1. Implementation of protected sites data flows- INSPIRE follow up, UNEP-WCMC discussions', Operations of Natura 2000 dataflow (incl. expert quality control- GIS quality control) WP4 , Operations of CDDA dataflow 2. Improvements of BDC operations Organisation of a BDC web page in EEA’s thematic website - Contribute Use cases for INSPIRE work on Annex I and III - Further conceptual development of BDC in a BISE context 3. Maintenance and further development of specific IT web applications Natura 2000 viewer, - EUNIS database and website, - EUNIS Improvement of species application- Data and information on habitats and links to species – integration of Article 17 data 4. Support to WP7 – presentation and access to nature data
Biodiversity data centrePlans and challenges • Driven by policy demands : biodiversity indicators and EU directives reporting, adaptation to climate change • Global information sharing e.g. GIBF, data tagging e.g EU research project LIFEWATCH • Mobilising NGO data and citizen observations Data Policy + wild crop relatives ……. + pollinators BISE /CHM + Invasive species EEA Current Data Species protected and rest listed
