  1. New Eligibility Requirements

  2. Q & A Q.When will this requirement go into effect? A. Changes will go into effect with the May-June 2011 testing window. Q. Why are the exam eligibility requirements changing? A. The requirements are changing to reflect changes and needs of the HR profession. The new requirements will result in better alignment with the candidate profiles that exist.

  3. Q & A Q. How is “demonstrated HR experience” defined? A. If a candidate is not clearly in a typical HR position (on the approved position title list) a candidate must demonstrate that: • At least 51% of their daily activities are within the HR function, and • Activities are at the exempt (professional) level, or • An individual has direct supervision of those who deliver HR services Q. How is “global HR experience” defined? A. Having direct cross-border HR responsibilities for two or more countries or regions. If an applicant works for a company that has business in two or more countries but that applicant does not have hands-on HR experience in those countries, they would be ineligible to sit for the exam.

  4. Q & A Q.Who will be most affected by the new eligibility requirements? A. Those who are most affected by the new eligibility requirements are prospective HR certificants, students and current certificants whose certification cycle ends after 2011 when the new eligibility requirements go into effect. Q. How will the new eligibility requirements impact prospective HR certificants? A. The new eligibility requirements call for increased years of experience and education level and, for the GPHR exam applicants, global HR experience. Therefore, the new requirements may change when one would be eligible to sit for one of the exams.

  5. Q & A Q.How will the new eligibility requirements impact students/ recent graduates? A. Students will not be eligible to sit for the PHR or GPHR exams until they meet the new eligibility requirements. Students will need to meet the same requirements as non-students. Q. If students/recent graduates will no longer be eligible to take the PHR or GPHR exams what is the alternative ? A. SHRM offers the HR essentials certificate program that will provide students/recent graduates with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the HR profession. This program is not intended to replace the PHR or GPHR certification exam.

  6. Q & A Q.I have taken and passed the PHR exam as a student. If students/recent graduates are no longer eligible to sit for the PHR or GPHR exams, how does that affect my status? A. Students who have taken and passed the exam prior to 2011 will still have five years from the date of passing the exam to obtain the two years of exempt-level HR work experience. If students are unable to obtain two years of exempt-level HR experience within five years, they must retake the exam and qualify under the new eligibility requirements beginning 2011. Q.I graduate in 2010 and current eligibility requirements state that I have up to 12 months after my graduation to take the exam. Will I still have the opportunity to do so? A. Students who graduate in 2010 and qualify to take the exam under current eligibility requirements can do so before 2011. You will not be able to sit for the exam in 2011 when the new eligibility requirements go into effect.

  7. Q & A Q.Can I still recertify by retaking the exam? A. Current certificants can still recertify by examination. If you were eligible to sit for the exam under the current eligibility requirements you will not be able to recertify by exam if you are not eligible under the new eligibility requirements starting 2011. Q. Where can I go for more information? A. www.hrci.org/certification info@hrci.org 1-866-898-4724
