  2. 1. Louisiana Purchase: -doubled the size of the United States, adding 828,000 square miles. 2. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark: -led an expedition west to newly acquired land; they were hired by President Thomas Jefferson.

  3. 3. Lewis and Clark had three goals: A. Search for a water route to the Pacific Ocean. B. Establish relationships with Native Americans. C. Pay close attention to soil and the face of the Country.

  4. 4. Another War with Britain (early 1800’s): -tension increased with Britain and the U.S. -the British Navy was seizing U.S. sailors, claiming they were British deserters -Britain also seized U.S. goods and cargo.

  5. 5. War of 1812: A. United States goes to War with Britain, to regain their Shipping freedom. B. This War was known for its many battles at sea. C. Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” as a result of this war.

  6. 6. Battle of New Orleans: -last Battle and victory in the “War of 1812,” led by American General Andrew Jackson7. Annex: -means to add

  7. 8. Manifest Destiny: -belief that the U.S. should expand west to the Pacific Ocean9. Texas becomes independent from Mexico: -Some U.S. citizens wanted to annex Texas, to increase the size of the U.S.

  8. 10. Oregon Trail: 2,000 mile route traveled by many pioneers that would settle in Oregon Country. 11. Wagon Train: -a long and difficult journey taken in covered wagons 12. Oregon Country: -northwest portion of what is now the United States

  9. 13. Missionaries: -some Christians moves to Oregon Country to teach their religion to Native Americans14. Oregon Fever: -people were said to have Oregon Fever if they were eager to seek a new life in Oregon Country.15. Oregon Trail: -Life on the Oregon Trail was not easy.

  10. 16. Mormons: -Mormons traveled west after the murder of their leader, Joseph Smith, and unfair treatment.

  11. 17. Gold Rush: A. after gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, many people fled to California from many different places. B. people took numerous routes to California to become gold miners. C. few miners ever found gold.

  12. 18. Pony Express: -a 2,000 mile mail route that lasted about one year, till the invention of the telegraph, mail carriers rode about 75 miles each, then they handed their mail bags to a new rider.

  13. 19. Transcontinental Railroad: A. railroad that crossed the continent. B. It reduced travel time, and allowed goods to reach more people faster. C. It also linked the East with the West

  14. 20. Homestead Act: -Government gave pioneers 160 acres of land if they were willing to start a new farm on the Great Plains. This encouraged more people to move to the Great Plains.

  15. 21. Great Plains: A. region of dry grassland that was difficult to farm B. sod consisted of tangled roots C. the weather was harsh

  16. 22. American fever: -brought many Europeans to the Great Plains, in search of good land.23. Exodusters: -African American pioneers who traveled to the West in search of freedom.

  17. 24. Cattle drive: -thousands of cattle being herded by cowboys, in order to provide cattle to eastern cities25. Cattle drive: -there was no longer a need for cattle drives once a railroad route was established in Texas.

  18. 26. Barbed wire: -Farmers and Ranchers changed the Great Plains appearance by fencing the land.

  19. 27. Native Americans: -did not like the change that Westward expansion brought, they fought to keep their freedom and were eventually placed on reservations.

  20. 28. Lakota and Nez Perce: -both tribes put up a good fight to stay on their native land.
