  1. “My Egg Safety Device” Name and Date

  2. Appearance and Materials • My device looks like …….. • I used cardboard, a coffee can, some foam padding, and string to protect the egg

  3. The Physics • The egg will be traveling 20 feet (6.1 meters) • Time to fall, from Distance = ½*g*t^2 is 1.12 seconds (with no air resistance). • Max speed from acceleration, v = g*t is 11m/s • Mass of egg = 60 grams or 0.060 kg • Momentum = m*v = 0.66 kg*m/s • Potential Energy of Drop = m*g*h = 3.6 Joules •  Required Impulse = 0.66 kg*m/s •  Required work on egg = 3.6 Joules

  4. The Physics • Newton’s First Law – Inertia: egg keeps going • Newton’s Second Law – Forces cause accelerations • Newton’s Third Law – Foam pushed egg, egg pushes foam • Momentum and Impulse – Impulse causes changes in momentum, Impulse = F*t • Work = Change in Energy – Work = F*distance

  5. My Egg Safety Device Will…. • Reduce forces on the egg by ……. • (Work = Force x Distance) • (Impulse = Force x time) Describe the materials that reduce the force on your egg. Compare your design to car safety devices and sports equipment designed to protect your “egg”.

  6. Some things I tried that didn’t work • Dropping a live chicken • Using a zip-lock bag full of marshmallows (might actually work!) • Wrapping rubber bands around it to make it into a “super-egg”
