  1. Looking at Oracle Spatial and ArcSDE as spatial data storage alternatives Looking at Oracle Spatial and ArcSDE as spatial data storage alternatives

  2. ArcSDE is a gateway that allows you to store and manage spatial data with other business data in a RDBMS Source: ESRI

  3. Oracle Spatial is a set of functions and procedures that enables spatial data to be stored, accessed, and analyzed in an Oracle database. Enterprise Spatial Information Systems Web-based applications Wireless location-based applications Oracle database

  4. NEPAssist ? Why? WHY Powerful spatial data analysis capabilities deployed over the web

  5. Oracle Spatial vs. ArcSDE Oracle SpatialArcSDE interface ESRI products • Oracle Spatial + ArcIMS • ArcIMS • Oracle Spatial Display Data Perform complex spatial analysis Display data and maps Powerful spatial analysis: SQL • finding nearest neighbor • buffering • union • intersection • theme on theme selection

  6. Oracle Spatial or SDE as a data storage format • Save disk resources • One storage format • Response time is important for web applications • ArcSDE: universal access is limited • Oracle Spatial: Data analysis with Oracle Spatial and SQL statements • Data analysis (statistics) can be done inside Oracle • Most users are interested in the data as opposed to maps • Oracle spatial provides open and direct access to the simple feature geometries • Data Management • Performance • Flexibility • Interoperability

  7. Performance LIVE DEMO http://204.46.96.85/website/os_vs_sde/frame.htm

  8. Benchmarking

  9. Client browser Example of analysis result table for OS

  10. DATA FORMAT Oracle SpatialArcSDE • Spatial table • User_sde_geom_metadata table + • Spatial index • Table_registry • GDC_object classes • Business table • Feature table • Layers table • S-table + • Spatial index

  11. ArcCatalog Create SDE layer • Oracle Spatial layers can be converted to shapefiles and vice versa. • Conversion from one projection to another is easy. • Data extracted from an Oracle database environment such as Envirofacts can be converted into an oracle spatial layer easily. • e.g. TRI facilities extracted from envirofacts. Create Oracle Spatial layer LIVE DEMO

  12. Final Remarks Final remarks • The hybrid: Oracle Spatial/ArcIMS provides a good alternative for applications that require complex data analysis and need to be deployed over the web • Oracle Spatial is a good complement to ESRI’s model for spatial data storage • Oracle Spatial layers are slower than SDE layers • We are still testing and evaluating the application
