2017 High School Survey • ScanTron Survey distributed in PE period during last week of February, 2017 • 2151 students at Hall & Conard • Question on substance use, bullying, sexual health and other risk behaviors • Note: Results were not broken down by school

Past 30-day Drug Use – Overall • 35.7% of all students report having used at least one drug (of any type) and/or alcohol in the past month • 43% of Juniors • 57% of Seniors
Co-Occurring Use Alcohol & Rx Use Marijuana Among those who drank alcohol in the last month, 54.6% used marijuana at least once during the same time. Among those who misused Rx drugs at least once in the past month, 69.1% used marijuana at least once during the same time. • 22.3% - students reporting past-month alcohol use also indicate 30-Day NMUPD • 29.2% - students who report heavy drinking (getting drunk at least once in 30-days) also indicate 30-Day NMUPD Results from WH Student Survey, 2017 (n=2151)
Co-Occurring Use Alcohol & Rx Use • Among those who drank alcohol in the last 30-days… • 41.8% used an electronic vapor product at least once during the same time. • 15.3% smoked cigarettes at least once during the same time. • Among those who misused Rx drugs… • 56.9% used an electronic vapor product at least once during the same time. • 36.6% smoked cigarettes at least once during the same time. 2017 Parent Survey • Developed and piloted with West Hartford Community of Concern • Distributed to parents of students at West Hartford’s public high schools and middle schools through district email list-servs and online school newsletters • 158 responses were recorded in late May - Early June, 2017.
Perception of Youth Alcohol Use & Rx Misuse • About 81% of parents see alcohol use among high school students as a major or moderate problem. • 48% of parents see NMUPD among high schoolers as a major or moderate problem. A majority of parents report not knowing about the significance of youth NMUPD.

How significant of a problem is parental permission of teen alcohol use at home parties?
Home Storage Alcohol Prescription Drugs 93.6% of parents who had prescription drugs in their home kept them in an unlocked location. About 51% kept them unlocked in a bathroom cabinet About 42% kept them unlocked in a kitchen cabinet • 92.9% of parents who had alcohol in their homes kept it in an unlocked location.
Disposal of Prescription Drugs • 53.8% - Disposed of at home • 18.4% - Kept in Cabinet or elsewhere in home • 13.3% - Disposed at a “Take Back” Event • 3.2% - Used a mail-back pouch from pharmacy Note: Respondents were able to choose more than one response. Not all responses are included above.
2018 Celebrate West Hartford -Community Survey • Distributed to adults and high school aged students at the 2018 Celebrate West Hartford Fair. • Questions on prescription drug and alcohol storage practices, substance use, and availability of substance free spaces or activities. • A total of 89 responses were recorded. Of which 34 were adults and 55 were high school aged youth.

2018 Teen Drug Knowledge & Perception Survey • Distributed during the WH Teen Center hours through the month of May 2018 and during the final Teen Night on June 8, 2018. • 49 responses were recorded. • The survey asked high school aged teens about their perception of drugs, drug use, and substance free spaces in the West Hartford area.
