School of Medicine Established in 2001, the School of Medicine at Swansea University aims to be a centre of excellence in world-class research and medical education Principal activities are: • Education: Four-year Graduate Entry Medicine Programme, BSc Genetics and Medical Genetics Programmes and Higher degree programmes including PhD, MD, MCh and Masters degrees • Research: Interdisciplinary biomedical and health services research at the Institute of Life Science where 87% of research staff have been recognised as producing research of international quality or above (RAE2008) • Third Mission: The School of Medicine is also fulfilling its third mission obligations at the Institute of Life Science

Institute of Life Science Phase Two • 5000m2 CHIRAL – Health Services Research, Clinical Trials Unit, Health Informatics (HIRU + HIRL) • Clinical Research Facility • Centre for NanoHealth • Research Imaging • Business Incubation • Innovation and Enterprise • Mass Spectrometry • Facts£28.8m bringing total value of ILS to £80million (over £100m with CNH) • £16m Capital build • £10m Grant from Department of Health • Tripling of business incubation space • Moving more than 100 people from Grove Ground-breaking November 2009 • Completion early summer 2011 Proposed view of ILS Phase Two from Swansea University

  5. Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust ABM University Trust is a key partner in ILS Phase 2. It is involved in the following ways: • Donation of land worth £1 million to the project • Integration with current Trust Clinical Research Unit • Medical imaging • Health informatics • Ambulatory Care Centre Proposed view of ILS Phase Two from Singleton Hospital

Our Obligations In order for ILS Phase Two to be a success, we need to deliver a range of project outcomes: • Create 450 high value jobs in three years • Assist commercial enterprises, 80% of which must be Welsh SMEs • Populate fifteen units within the incubator space • Record daily activity on the project including timesheets and enterprise assistance • Continue to undertake high quality research that advances medical knowledge
