  2. Bridging the Gap W. Frank Steely Library Steely Library made substantial progress this year in broadening patron access to resources, building and improving services, and continuing its growth as a provider of instruction to a widening clientele. These accomplishments were made more notable by the fact that Steely Library, as did the rest of the university, sustained a cut in funding.

  3. Bridging the Gap W. Frank Steely Library State of the Library--Highlights: • Collections • Budget • KYVL • Instruction • New Directions

  4. Bridging the Gap W. Frank Steely Library • Collections • Continued to widen access to the journal literature • Approximately 92% of our current journals are accessed electronically • The total number of journals from which users can obtain articles is now 39,067(a 20% increase from one year ago) • The number of electronic books has reached 35,611 (12% of the collection) • Added 3 new collections to JSTOR • We remain the only public university in Kentucky to hold all JSTOR collections for academic libraries

  5. Bridging the Gap W. Frank Steely Library • Collections, cont’d: • Experienced a decline in the use of SourceFinder • Our observations indicate that targeted purchases of journal packages and databases has allowed users to satisfy more of their information needs using local holdings. • Purchased 3,381 monographs • 17% decline in expenditures year-to-year • For the first time, we removed more books from the collection than we purchased

  6. Bridging the Gap W. Frank Steely Library • Budget: • Continued decline in materials budget • FY09: $1,198,298 vs FY10: $1,168,593 • Decline aggravated by serials inflation (est. $70,000) • 82% of expenditures went to serials • Maintained departmental allocation budget at $139,000 • Actual allocations totaled $140,518 after adjusting for the 30% cap • Two departments hit the cap—should stabilize soon • Allocations going forward will depend on stability of materials budget

  7. Bridging the Gap W. Frank Steely Library • KYVL: • State agencies are reducing their support • All constituencies are being asked to carry more of the budget load • NKU will see its fees increase from approximately $11,000 two years ago to $26,173 this year (a 1% increase in the middle of a fiscal year)

  8. Bridging the Gap W. Frank Steely Library • Instructional Programs: • Bachelor of Library Informatics • Completely online • Have reached 55 students as of Fall 2010 • Students reside in 5 states
