  2. Background Info – In 1530’s Parliament passed laws making the Anglican Churchthe established church of England. The Pilgrims were a religious group who wanted to separate from the Anglican church. They became known as separatists. The King was head of the Anglican church Religious groups that did not follow Anglican beliefs were persecuted(punished).

  3. Pilgrims In early 1600’s a group of separatists left England to live in Holland, which allowed people to worship more freely than in England. The separatist’s children began losing their English identity as they grew up so the separatists began looking for a place where they could worship freely and keep their English ways.

  4. Journey to America The pilgrims obtained a charter from the Virginia Co. to settle at the mouth of the Hudson River. They left England but were blown off course. They landed further north on Plymouth Rock(Massachusetts) Their charter was now invalid so they needed to agree on some new rules for when they went ashore.

  5. Mayflower Compact Written by Mayflower passengers as a form of government. Established the principles of “majority rule” and “self government”. Named after the pilgrim’s ship. Signed by all the men. All passengers agreed to abide by it’s contents.

  6. Hardships Although the pilgrims found baskets of corn stored in an abandoned Indian village, their food supplies ran low that first winter. (Indians had died of disease…result of CE) Pilgrims used sod houses, or hand dugs pits covered with branches for shelter. Half of the 100 Pilgrims died the first winter, aka “The Starving Time”.

  7. Native American Help Samoset – learned English from earlier European Explorers. Introduced pilgrims to Squanto Squanto – had been captured and sold as a slave in Spain. Escaped to England. Returned to America. Showed pilgrims how to plant, fish, and hunt in the new land.

  8. The First Thanksgiving After a good harvest that fall, Pilgrims invited local Indians to celebrate with them. They set aside a day to give thanks to God for their harvest and survival.
