Edify To instruct or improve spiritually; literally…to build; build up; to erect (“edifice” = a building)
Bible “Go up to the mountains, bring wood and rebuild the temple, that I may be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the LORD. Spoken to the remnant Jews as they were restoring worship following captivity in Babylon. Hag 1:8
The main purpose for worship is to glorify & please God. Another purpose for worship is to “edify” those who offer it to God.
Bible One who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
Bible So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church. What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
Bible Spoken to 1st century church in Corinth re: their use of their spiritual gifts in the worship assembly. 1 Cor 14:3, 5, 12, 26
We’ve not been instructed to build a temple... …nor will we be able to use miraculous gifts in worship. Yet, we can & should be “edified” by being together this morning.
We can be “edified” as we… …contribute to the Lord’s work from how He has prospered us; …blend our voices together in song, praising God & teaching each other;
We can be “edified” as we… …memorialize the death of Christ by eating His supper; …bow our heads together in petitioning the enthroned God in prayer;
We can be “edified” as we… …open our Bibles together in studying the word of God.
