Dear Brethren, The truth of divinity within oneself and as a result connectedness to God is a matter of no small consequence and requires on the part of the aspirant for the mysteries of Freemasonry a serious commitment to the improvement of self. So, let me guess, you're probably wondering, "What does Freemasonry have to do with the improvement of self?" Well, the answer is really quite simple - everything! Yes, that's right-everything! Freemasonry has everything to do with theimprovement of self and boldly proclaims so to the world through its unofficial motto - Making good men better. Now, in light of this revelation, the question becomes, "How exactly does Freemasonry make good men better?" Well, the answer is not so simple... it does and it doesn’t. So, you're probably asking yourself, "What the hell is he talking about?!" This appears to be a recurring question, but a fair one nonetheless. Or, you may be wondering, “Didn’t he just say Freemasonry has everything to do with the improvement of self?” Yes, I did. So, allow me to answer each of these questions by addressing the latter first. You see, although Freemasonry has everything to do with the improvement of self, it is not so much Freemasonry that makes good men better but the willful actions of good men, who, when purposefully immersed in the light of Freemasonry undergo long-lasting change which ultimately results in an overall manifestation of the betterment of self. You see, if a candidate for the mysteries of the Craft is to make any real progress toward the improvement of self, he must willfully engage in an honest assessment of the lesser impulses/urges/motivations which override the thoughts, emotions, and actions of his better nature from day to day. Now, for some, what I've just explained may be easier said than done but in all honesty, although difficult, if we are to make any significant advancement in our understanding of the language, culture, and consciousness of our beloved Craft, we can only begin to do so once we've set upon a path that requires a close examination of ourselves. And it is for this reason that I end this message by recalling to mind the following question: What came you here to do? Most Fraternally in Light, Luis A.
