  1. ADVANCE: Institutional Transformation at New Mexico State University Successes and Challenges ADVANCE Conference Atlanta, GA, April 2004 Lisa M. Frehill, PI and Program Director Co-PIs: LeRoy Daugherty, Richard Hills, Christine Marlow and Kenneth Paap

  2. Success: Start-up Package Enhancement • Lack of adequate funding at NMSU—inability of institution to provide competitive packages vs. peers. • We “solve” a problem recognized as such by faculty and administrators. • LEVERAGE & OPPORTUNITY!

  3. Leverage and Opportunity • Easy to acquire data about past start-up packages. • Training sessions and one-on-one “interventions” for recruitment. • Opportunity to meet candidates and work with committees early in the search process. • Opportunity to work with new-hires on setting up budgets, accounts, etc. • VERIFICATION: make sure new-hires get what the departments and colleges said they would.

  4. New-hires in STEM at NMSU

  5. Challenges • Decentralization at NMSU—e.g., difficult to coordinate dual career hires across units. • Administrative Turnover • New President—will be on board in July • New Personnel Director • New Deans: Arts and Sciences and Engineering • Open positions • EEO/ADA Director—vacant for the past year; search failed, will search again. • Vice Provost for Research

  6. Challenges, cont’d. My own learning curve regarding administration, etc. HELP from: • Co-PIs at NMSU • Program Coordinator with professional experience • Program Directors at other ADVANCE institutions
