GOES-R Metadata Standards Richard Ullman– NASA/GSFC July 17, 2008
GOES-R Introduction • GOES-R series being developed to provide geostationary continuity to the GOES-N series • First launch planned no earlier than 2014 • Significant improvement in technology over GOES-I/M and GOES-N/O/P series • Improved Radiometrics • Improved Navigation • Operates through Eclipses • Five new instruments (ABI, GLM, SEISS, EXIS and SUVI) • Radically increased performance and data rates
GOES East GOES West GOES-R Ground Segment Facilities Mission Management NOAA Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF) Remote Backup (RBU) NOAA Wallops Ground Station (WCDAS) Product Distribution User Community Product Generation Archive and Access (CLASS*; ESPC*) Notional Functional Overview GOES-R Ground Segment Functional Elements GOES-R Re-broadcast Enterprise Management *CLASS: Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System ESPC: Environmental Satellite Processing Center
GOES-R Baseline Instruments to Meet User Requirements • Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) • Monitors and tracks severe weather • Images clouds to support forecasts • Better resolution (4X), faster coverage (5X), more bands (3.2X) and more coverage simultaneously • Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) • Detects lightning strikes as an indicator of severe storms • Continuous coverage of total lightning flash rate over land and water • Solar/Space Monitoring (SUVI, EXIS, SEISS) • Images the sun and measures solar output to monitor solar storms (SIS) • Measures magnetic fields and charged particles (SEISS) • Enables early warnings for satellite and power grid operations, telecom services, astronauts, and airlines • Better Imager (UV over X-Ray) • Better Heavy Ion detection, adds low energy electrons and protons
GOES-R Metadata Collection Points • Level 0Data • Reconstructed unprocessed instrument data at full resolution; any and all communications artifacts (e.g., synchronization frames, communications headers) removed • Level 1b Products • Level 0 data with radiometric and geometric correction applied to produce parameters in physical units • GOES-R Rebroadcast (GRB) Data • Level 1b + selected Level 2+ Products • Level 2+ Products • Level 2 and higher GOES-R Products
GOES-R Referenced Standards • ISO 19115 Geographic Information - Metadata • Mandatory attributes and applicable optional attributes • ISO 19115 Part 2 Extensions for Imagery and Gridded Data • ISO 19121 Imagery and Gridded Data • ISO 19130 Sensor and Data Model for Imagery and Gridded Data • ISO 19136 Geography Markup Language • ISO 19138 Data Quality Measures • ISO 19139 Metadata XML Schema Implementation • FGDC Conformance
Discussion Issues • Need to define a suitable data model for GOES-R Products • Will need to map ISO Standard(s) to GOES-R Data Model • Need to identify a standard way of representing: • Provenance/History • Operational Quality • Anomaly Recognition • Quasi-metadata (test results, event logs, performance records) • Need to identify suitable conventions for higher level products • Will need to map convention metadata model to GOES-R model • Need to identify suitable format representation for metadata • Will it be carried as payload in the data file or separately ?
