  1. “Flipping Out”withTI nSpire Technology Robyn Poulsen T3 Regional Instructor Lake Placid High School

  2. Who is Robyn Poulsen? • Teacher of HS math for 20 years • Last 14 years in Lake Placid, NY • T3 Regional Instructor • Began “Flipping” my Algebra 2 & Trig classes in 2012-2013 year.

  3. Why I Flipped • Increase student contact time. • Easier to differentiate instruction. • Need time for interractive activities in class. • College Readiness

  4. Part I The Student’s Experience

  5. AT HOME WORK: • Students arrive in class having done the homework the night before: • (LOG IN to MATH XL) • WATCH the video (taking good notes) • (DO the related QUESTIONS on Math XL)

  6. LOG IN TO NAVIGATOR SYSTEM upon entering class, and immediately complete the Warm Up (“First Five Five”) “PRE-QUIZ”

  7. IN CLASS WORK: • Practice Problems within Classwork Packet. • Activity on nSpire - Application of Function Composition from www.education.ti.com • math nSpired • CLOSURE: “Ticket Out the • Door” document on • nSpire.

  8. Part II The Teacher’s Experience

  9. I make all of my own videos via Camtasia Studio Software THE VIDEOS http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.html

  10. via MATH XL How do I get my students to actually watch the videos?

  11. During Study Halls, part of Lunch, Before/After School: • Students can use computer in my room, in the library media center, in one of two computer labs. • Can burn DVDs upon request. • Most, if not all, students have some sort of phone that will allow them to watch videos. What if my students don’t have internet access at home?

  12. IN CLASS WORK • Worksheets that are “leveled” for Differentiated Instruction • “MUST – SHOULD – COULD” • I create all of these • Modified from former homework worksheets • Our students do not have textbooks

  13. IN CLASS WORK Time for Hands-On / Interractive / Meaningful Activities from sources like: * education.ti.com * math counts * Dan Meyer 3-Acts * Odyssey of the Mind

  14. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS The TI nSpire Navigator System allows me to constantly assess how my students are doing in class *Screen Capture *Live Presenter *Quick Polls *Pre-prepared Self-Check documents *Pre-prepared Study Card documents

  15. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS • Math XL allows me to check how my students did on homework BEFORE they enter class. • If many students have struggled on the same question, I immediately adjust my lesson plan to address the problem & reteach as needed. • If only one or two students have struggled, I sit with them individually during that class time to help them learn the material.

  16. Still INTERESTED in FLIPPING?My advice: Start the year off right!
