What Is Solar Energy? Solar energy is a form of energy that uses sunlight to create electricity. It’s formed by sunlight being absorbed into photovoltaic cells. Photovoltaic means that it converts light energy into electrical energy, AC or DC. A cell is a device that delivers the electric current to the battery. Examples: • A solar powered calculator • Solar powered lights • Satellites orbiting Earth
Is Solar Energy A Renewable Source? Solar energy is a renewable source. Solar energy is a renewable source because we will always have sunlight. This light can be used over and over again without running out.
How Is Sunlight Changed Into Electricity? Sunlight gets absorbed by the solar panel and is converted into electrical current. Then the change controller controls how much charge is going into the battery because if the battery takes in too much charge it starts to lose the ability to hold charge. Then the inverter converts the direct current energy into alternating current energy since appliances and electronics run on alternating current.
Four Disadvantages Of Solar Energy • The cost to install solar panels is very expensive. • Give off very low power. • The sunlight isn’t always going to shine on your solar panels. • Sometimes unsightly
Advantages Of Solar Energy • Solar energy is a renewable source because it runs on sunlight which lasts forever. • Solar power doesn’t pollute the air because it doesn’t give of greenhouse gasses when it converts sunlight into direct current. • It pays for itself over time. • Requires little maintenance. • Lasts a long time because there are no moving parts.
