ELEMENT OF THE DAY • 48 – Cadmium – Cd • Cadmium, like mercury and lead, can accumulate in the environment and the body, and hence can cause long term damage to all forms of life. • Cadmium is most famous for use in nickel-cadmium (ni-cad) batteries, which you should recycle for the reasons mentioned above. These are being replaced by lithium ion and nickel metal hydride. • Cadmium-plated fasteners are used on bolts on airplanes because they don’t rust or corrode. • Cadmium sulfide makes a bright yellow pigment, but like many older paint pigments, it is toxic.
