  1. Fluorine

  2. Periodic Table Info  I am in group 7 and period 2 I belong to the Halogen family They call me F My atomic number is 9 and my atomic weight is 18.998 I have 9 protons, 9 electrons and 10 neutrons I am a nonmetal I am a gas when at room temperature

  3. My Discovery A French chemist named Henri Moissan discovered me in 1886 He found me by the electrolysis of potassium bifluoride dissolved in liquid HF My name comes from the Latin word “fluere” which means to flow

  4. My Special Qualities  I’m the most reactive of all the elements and I quickly attack all metals My salts (fluorides) were used for centuries in welding metals and for frosting glass before my element itself was isolated I am an essential ion for animals because it strengthens teeth and bones I am added to toothpaste and some drinking water However, too much of me is toxic

  5. Best Friends and Worst Enemies I am best friends with most of the nonmetals on the periodic table and the Halogens I especially like Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen I love myself  I dislike the Noble Gases even though I want to be them I also dislike the Alkali Metals because they are very different from me

  6. Important Things I have not done many important things However, I help your teeth from getting cavities and I am found in almost all brands of toothpaste My fluorides are also found in most drinking water as well as most foods

  7. Compounds • I form compounds with all elements on the periodic table besides neon and helium • Some of the main compounds I am used to make are: • Lithium Fluoride • Beryllium Fluoride • Aluminum Trifluoride

  8. Physical and Chemical Feautres Melting Point: -219.62 C Boiling Point: -188.14 C Corrosive, pale, yellow gas Highly reactive, most electronegative element Free fluorine has a strong, identifiable scent Highly toxic

  9. Fun Facts I can react with all organic and inorganic compounds I am a corrosive gas I cannot react with nitrogen or oxygen directly I am in the production of uranium I am also used in rocket fuel Pure fluorine is a pale yellow and highly poisonous gas
