Marine Radar • UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft) • Exempt in fleeting areas, assistance towing, pollution response • Meets Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services (RTCM) Standard; • Detailed regs 33 CFR 164.72 • When in doubt, contact manufacturer to see if particular model meets standards.
Searchlight • 33 CFR 164.72(a)(2) • UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft) • directed from main steering station • range 2 times length of tow
Magnetic Compass • UTV operating exclusively on Western Rivers • May have either a • Illuminated swing meter or, • Illuminated card type magnetic steering compass readable from main steering station • All other UTV’s >39.4’ must have illuminated card type magnetic steering compass
Electronic Position Fixing Device(GPS or Loran) • 33 CFR 164.72(a)(6) • UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft); • if towing seaward of navigable waters of U.S. • or > 3 NM from shore Great Lakes
Echo Depth Sounding Device • 33 CFR 164.72(a)(5) • UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft); • not required for UTVs towing exclusively on Western Rivers and, • Inland Waters in CG D8
Automatic Identification System (AIS) • 33 CFR 164.46(a)(3) • UTVs > 26 ft & > 600 HP; • only required in VTS areas or, • Vessel Movement Reporting System (listening watch)
Charts • 33 CFR 164.72(b)(1) • UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft), Charts or maps for area of operation; (current edition; extract acceptable)

Communications • 33 CFR 26.03(a)(3) • UTVs > 26ft NOT subject to Great Lakes Radio Agreement • VHF FM radios (including portable radios, i.e. handhelds) • Capable of transmitting / receiving on VHF FM Ch. 13 and, • Be capable of maintaining a continuous listening watch on Ch 16.
Communications in “Special Waters” • 33 CFR 26.03(e) & (f) • Select Waters on Mississippi, UTV’s must have an additional radio that is: • capable of transmitting and receiving on Ch 67, • VTS areas, UTV’s must have on board a radio that; • Is capable of transmitting and receiving on VTS frequency in 33 CFR 161.12(c)
Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) • Digital Selective Calling (DSC) • Since 1999, FCC required fixed mount radios to be equipped with the DSC feature. • DSC allows ship to ship private calls • DSC also has a distress channel monitored by commercial ships • DSC has a single button emergency transmission • DSC’s must be encoded with a unique nine digit FCC I.D. number
Navigational Lights • INLD (33 USC 2023) & INTL • White Mast Head Light (225 degrees); • 2nd mast head light abaft/above if >50M • 3rd mast head light abaft/above if >200M

Navigation Lights • INLD (33 USC 2024) Rule 24 (i) • Western Rivers (WR) Exception: White masthead lights are NOT required on UTVs engaged in towing on WRs above the Huey P. Long Bridge across the Lower Mississippi River, and the waters specified in 33 CFR 89.27.
