What is Reproduction? • Process of making new offspring • Can be done asexually or sexually
Types of Reproduction ASEXUAL SEXUAL Two individuals (usu. Male and Female) Offspring have characteristics of both parents Offspring with new genetics • One individual • Offspring identical to parent • Offspring with identical genetics
Sexual Reproduction in Plants • Involves two sex cells • Male = pollen grains • Female = ovules • Which are female parts and which are male?
Important Parts in Reproduction FEMALE • Ovule: female gamete in the plant; develops into seeds after fertilization • Ovary: produces and contains the ovules; develops into fruit after fertilization • Stigma: part of the plant that receives the male sex cell • Pistil = stigma + style + ovary MALE • Anther: produces pollen (male sex cell) • Filament: supports anther • Stamen = anther + filament
How does reproduction happen in plants? • Pollination – transfer of pollen from anther to stigma of a flower. 2 types: cross pollination/self pollination • The pollen grain lands on the stigma, germinates (forms a pollen tube) which grows down into the style • Fertilization – pollen tube finally reaches ovule where fusion of cells occurs • After fertilization – petals, sepals, style, anther, filament all whither off. Ovary is left behind. Ovary = fruit; Ovules = seeds
