  1. Newspaper Homework Assignment One (support skills and overview).Due: January 28 (Monday)Directions: The homework must be typed.   Print out the hard copy to hand in, in addition to sending it to me by email. (zzhang@mail.sdsu.edu).I. Dictionary work: 1. Look up and type out the following characters:a.       Pinyin=róng;           Meaning=fine hair; velvetb.      Pinyin=qián;            Meaning=pliers; pincers; clampsc.       Pinyin=xīng;            Meaning=having fishy smelld.      Pinyin=fān; Meaning=canvase.       Pinyin=liàn; Meaning=be in love

  2. 2.      Look up the following characters by guessing pronunciation and list the pinyin and meaning (either in English or Chinese). There may be more than one alternative guesses of the pronunciation, all of which you may have to try to get the right character.

  3. II. Key Words: Using any kind of dictionary, find all the words containing the three characters 报,刊,版having to do with newspapers and publications, list them and give the pinyin and English meanings for each word.

Find 3 kinds of Chinese newspaper, wherever you find them (in the library, at supermarkets or online), and give the following information for each.  Do the following in Chinese if possible.1. The name. Where is it published?  Is it in simplified or traditional characters?  Free or not? Date of publication of the particular issue you saw.  Note the format of date.  Is it different from English?  If so, what it is (see the file ‘pages and columns’ for examples) ?  What did you notice in format and layout that is different from an English newspaper? 2. How many pages are there? What are they called? What are they about?

  5. IV. Select at least 20 page/column headings given in the online file ‘Pages and columns’ that are most interesting to you and type out the page/column headings, provide pinyin and explain what the page/column may contain in Chinese or English.  Try to have a mix of those from mainland China and from Taiwan and overseas communities.
