  1. ` CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT ENGINEERING MODULE - 3 • Chapter 2 • Human Safety and Environment (HSE) Prepared by # NANDI MALLAPURMATH

  2. OBJECTIVES :- • To Increase speed in construction. • To Increase in standard of living • To reduce Cost of Construction • To reduce Human Suffering • “CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY HEALTH AND SAFETY”

  3. H & SIssues for Construction workers In FIELD :- Pain or injury from overexertion Exposer to moulds, fungi & rodent droppings Exposer to toxic chemicals. (leads, paints, asbestos, dust etc.. ) Working in High Temperatures. Working with machinery equipment's & Hand tools. Extension of working days , stress , headache etc.. At night working in Poor Visibility.

  4. H & S • Safety Precautions To Prevent ACCIDENTS • Some of the Must & Should PRECAUTIONS that has to be taken are :- • Usage of PERSONAL safety Devices (Ex- Helmet, belts, Boots, Goggles, Gloves etc.. • Workers Should not Carry heavy Loads which can cause INJURY. • Unskilled person must not be let to the use of MCHINE OPERATING EQUIPMENTS. • SAFETY TRAINING must be provided to workers. • LIGHTINING arrangements should be made properly for night shift workers.

  5. H & S MEASURES IN Constructions • ! SITE LAYOUT & PLANNING. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (PPE) FIRST AID KITS AND ACCIDENTS REPORTING. HEALTH AND SAFETY WARNING SIGNS. SAFETY POLICY. H & S TRAINING IN CONSTRUCTION SITES.

  6. H & S MEASURES IN Constructions CONTD.. • H & S TRAINING IN CONSTRUCTION SITES. RADIATION Ionizing radiation is produced by X-RAY equipment & by radioactive material. And such radiations are present in construction sites. DUST This is responsible for many lung diseases. Silica & asbestos dust are very dangerous NOISE Permissible noise levels are 90dBA. When a satisfactory noise level cannot be attained ,personal ear protection must be provided TOXIC MATERIALS It is encountered by workers at any time. Mostly observed in Reconstruction sites. Effort should be madw to protect utility lines and underground gases. HEAT Workers often experience this at site. This affects workers as well and reduces speed od construction. Thus proper maintainace should be done in order to reduce the heating effect on site.

  7. SAFETY MEASURES TO BE ADOPTED FOR.. • EXCAVATION 9 8 7 HANDALING BUILDING MATERIALS DEMOLITION STORAGE Reference : The basics you can find anywhere 5 Steps To Successful Storytelling Published on April 5, 2014 Featured in: Marketing & Advertising SCAFOLDING,LADDERS,FORM WORK & OTHER EQUIPMENTS FABRICATION & ERECTION DRILLING & BLASTING 1 2 4 5 HOT BITUMINOUS WORKS 3

  8. SUPERVISOR. • KNOWLADGE OF UNDERGROUND SOURCES. • SAFETY HELMETS. • TRENCHES SHOULD BE PROPERLY SHORED & TIMBERED • EXCAVATED MATERIALS SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY • SAFETY • MEASURES EXCAVATION

  9. SAFETY MEASURES CONTD.. • LOADING AND UNLOADING OF EXPLOSIVES. • STORAGE OF EXPLOSIVES. • HANDALING. • FIRE. • PERMISION OF BLASTING. • MATERIAL APPROVAL • PHYSICAL CONDITION. DRILLING & BLASTING

  10. SAFETY MEASURES CONTD.. PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN AVOID FIRE. CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN USING STORING MATERIALS. KEEP HOT WORK AREA CLEAN. HOT BITUMIN SHOULD NOT COME IN CONTACT WITH WATER TEMPRATURE IS GIVEN AS PER REQUIRMENT DUST IS SUPPRESED & REDUCED TO MINIMUM HOT BITUMINOUS WORKS

  11. SAFETY MEASURES CONTD.. EVERY SCAFOLD SHOULD BE SECUERLY SUPPORTED. CONSTRUCTION & DISMANTELING MUST BE DONE BY EXPERIANCED MEMBERS. INSPECTION FOR EVERY 3-DAYS. LADDER HEIGHT SHOULD NOT EXCEED 8m. PRECATIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN DURING DISMANTELING. OPERATING MEMBERS MUST BE TRAINED WELL. SCAFFOLDING, LADDERS & ETC..

  12. SAFETY MEASURES CONTD.. ALL EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE CHECKED PERIODICALLY. USAGE OF SAFETY GUARD. USAGE OF GLOVES & APRONS. PROPER GUIDANCE SHOULD BE GIVEN WHILE USING POWER CABELS. SEPARATE STORAGE SHOULD BE DONE. USAGE OF HELMETS & SAFETY BELTS. ERECTION EQUIPMENTS MUST BE MADE USE PROPRLY LIFTING TOOLS, WIRE ROAPS SHOULD BE CHECKED BEFORE USE. FABRICATION & ERECTION

  13. SAFETY MEASURES CONTD.. STORAGE OF CEMENT. STORAGE OF BRICKS. STORAGE OF STEEL. STORAGE OF EXPLOSIVES. STORAGE OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS. STORAGE OF TIMBERS & PLAYWOODS. STORAGE

  14. SAFETY MEASURES CONTD.. DANGER SIGNS MUST BE INDICATED. UNOTHERISED PERSON ENTRING MUST BE RESTRICTED. PRE-CUTTING OF ELECTRICAL WIRES. BEFORE SLATTERING ALL GAS, WATER STREAMS MUST BE SHUT DOWN. USAGE OF BELTS, HELMETS DEMOLITION

  15. SAFETY MEASURES CONTD.. HANDELING OF BUILDING MATERIAL PREVENTION OF INURIES. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENTS. KNOWLADGE OF THE USAGE OF BUILDING MATERIALS. SAFETY MANAGEMENT WHILE LIFTING BULKY MATERIALS.

  16. H & S • SAFETY MEETINGS. AT SITE Regular & frequent safety meetings should hosted & conducted by Contractor to monitor SAFETY activities on project site. SITE ORIENTATION Freshers for job must attend this, in order to get to know about working mannerism of project site WEEKLY This is conducted by all contactors, where they discuss about actions taken w.r.t to safety. And documentation work is maintained to submit it at end of MONTH MONTHLY It is held at higher level. Here the monthly report is reviewed & change in actions are implemented.
