  2. Vision Build resilient communities as a result of improved ecosystem management for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) Objective Pool expertise and advocate for policy change and best practice in ecosystem management for DRR and CCA, based on science, practitioners’ experience and indigenous knowledge

  3. Rationale Healthy and well-managed ecosystems - such as coral reefs, mangroves, forests and wetlands - reduce disaster risk by acting as natural buffers or protective barriers, for instance through flood and landslide mitigation and water filtration and absorption. IWRM - tropical storms and flooding in Guatemala / Mexico following Stan, 2005

  4. Mosaic landscaping for Fire Management - Spain Rationale Maintaining and enhancing ecosystems for natural hazard mitigation and prevention can strengthen local adaptation capacities to counter the effects of climate change.

  5. Rationale Incorporating the use of biodiversity and ecosystem services in an overall strategy to help people adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change is the basis of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA).  Barriers versus Dune Rehabilitation

  6. Partnership Pool and shareresources (expertise, knowledge, networks, fieldexperieces and learnfromeachother) to strengthen ourwork andcollectively have a higher impact Partnership and collaborations atregional, national and sub-national levels Provide the opportunity for others to tapinto a network in this area of workratherthanindividual organisations

Policy influencing and awareness raising • UN ISDR Global Platforms • Global Assessment Reports • Global Risk Forum • World Conservation Congress • EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement • Network of environment, DRR and development planning scientists and practitioners • Convened experts’ workshop • Critical mass – ‘friends’ of PEDRR

  8. National/sub-national capacity building for implementing ecosystem based DRR • PEDRR training course • Generating scientific knowledge and best practices • Key publications • PDNA
