Extraversion and Introversion • We are extraverting when we: • Talk to other people • Listen to what someone is saying • Cook dinner, or make a cup of coffee • Work on a car • We are introverting when we: • Read a book • Think about what we want to say or do • Are aware of how we feel • Think through a problem so that we understand it

Sensing and Intuition • We are “Sensing” when we: • Taste food • Notice a stoplight has changed • Memorize a speech • Follow steps in a plan • We are “Intuitive” when we: • Come up with a new way of doing things • Think about future implications for a current action • Perceive underlying meaning in what people say or do • See the big picture

Thinking and Feeling • Thinking Mode • Research a product, buy the best one • Do “The Right Thing”, whether we like it or not • Choose not to buy blue shirt, we already have 2 • Establish guidelines to follow for performing tasks • Feeling Mode • Buy something because we like it • Refrain from telling someone something, in case of upset • Decide not to take job, don’t like work environment • Decided to move to be close to someone we care about

Judging and Perceiving • We are using Judging when we: • Make a list of things to do • Schedule things in advance • Form and express judgments • Bring closure to an issue so that we can move on • We are using Perceiving when we: • Postpone decisions to see what other options are available • Act spontaneously • Decide what to do as we do it, rather than forming a plan ahead of time • Do things at the last minute

  12. Recognize Weaknesses • Determine appropriate preference in situations (i.e., Feeling & Thinking) • Recognizing others’ behaviors as a preference rather than an annoyance or flaw

  14. The Nature of Teams “The word team usually refers to a small task group in which the members have a common purpose, interdependent roles, and complementary skills” (Yukl, 2010, p. 333).

  15. Guidelines for Team Building • Emphasize common interests and values • Use ceremonies and rituals • Use symbols to develop identification with the group • Encourage and facilitate social interaction

  16. Guidelines for Team Building (cont.) • Tell people about group activities and achievements • Conduct process analysis sessions • Conduct alignment sessions • Increase incentives for mutual cooperation

  19. These guidelines include (Yukl, 2010): • Develop a personal vision of career objectives. • Seek appropriate mentors. • Seek challenging assignments. • Improve self-monitoring.

  20. Guidelines continued (Yukl, 2010) : • Seek relevant feedback. • Learn from mistakes. • Learn to view events from multiple perspectives. • Be skeptical of easy answers.
