  1. Population Pyramids Lab

  2. Dependency Load Independent Population

  3. Population Pyramid Analysis Countries with high birth rates include Ecuador and Libya. These economies will be dominated by those <15 (similar to Canada during the baby boom). Private industry will focus on products and services destined for this age group (clothing, toys, electronics, movies, music etc…). Social programs will also be focussed on this group which means pediatric health care and, elementary and secondary education to name a few.

  4. Population Pyramid Analysis Italy has a low birth rate. Private industry will be focus on products and services destined for this age group (travel, leisure, investment products, renovations services, luxury goods etc…). Social programs will also be focussed on geriatric health care, homecare support, and retirement home development among others.

  5. Population Pyramid Analysis Although Italy has the second highest percent of its female population between 25 and 49, this group is creating the smallest percent <15. This must be the result of a small birth rate, and will cause a very slow, or negative, population growth rate as these children reach adulthood (-0.1on PRB sheets). As of 2010 Italy’s birth rate was 9 (PRB.org; 2011).

  6. Population Pyramid Analysis An increasing percent of the population above 65, means fewer workers are available to pay into pension plans in order to support those who are accessing these plans. Without planning for such changes in the population structure there is a distinct possibility that plans could collapse under the weight of their obligations.

  7. Population Pyramid Analysis Both Ecuador and Libya had high dependency loads as of 1998. Their situations were more difficult still since the majority of the dependency load was <15. Demographers point to such large groups of young people as sources of rapid change when they reach their late 20s and 30s. In Ecuador, this is the generation which elected social reformer Rafael Correa. In Libya, this is the age group which dominated the rebels who overthrew Ghadafi
