MBMAX64 Survey Window.

  3. Starting Out – Run MBMAX64 To Launch - HYSWEEP Menu: “HYSWEEP Editor – 64 Bit” or Use MBMAX Icon in HYPACK Shell (will default with 64-bit OS) • All Controls are on single window layout. • Items that are greyed out indicate an operation is needed before using that function • Progress Bar shows program running.

Editor Settings (Edit – Settings) Use Edit Menu, Settings Update Mode – Updating the Survey After Changes. • Auto: For Fast Computers / Small Surveys. • Manual: For Slower Computers / Large Surveys. • Use Update Cells to apply changes to data Survey Data • Delete Soundings Between Deleted Position Points: No soundings will be saved when positions are deleted.

  5. Editor Settings Custom Edit Folder: Over-ride HYPACK Default. Time Format: Select the Display Format. Useful for correlating points in the HSX file Other: Include Type in LOG File: Useful Way to Identify LOG Files. • Example: • Load Raw Files From HSX_1029.LOG … • Saves HS2 to HS2_1209.LOG. • Saves XYZ to XYZ_1209.LOG. Link Golden Soundings to HYPACK Database allows these designated soundings to be used in the databasees.

Loading Files Use File Menu, Load Survey or the Folder Button. • Open Files: • *.HSX – HYSWEEP Survey Format. • *.HS2 – HYSWEEP Edit Format. • *.ALL – Kongsberg Raw Format. • *.XYZ –ASCII XYZ Format. • *.LOG – HYPACK Catalog containing any of the Above. Catalog: Select One or More Survey Files From HYPACK *.LOG.

Read Parameters Everything Required to Process data from Multibeam sonars, Laser systems and interferometry systems • Tabs: • Survey: Applies to all loaded files. • Corrections: Tide, Sound Velocity and Dynamic Draft. • Devices: Device Selections and Offsets. • Processing: Heave and Sonar Settings. In MBMAX64: Any of the Read Parameters can be updated After Files are Loaded!

  8. Survey Tab, Survey Info Summary of Survey Info • Depth or Elevation: Select Your Work Mode. • Load Sidescan if Available and Useful for Editing. Can be viewed (only) in editing with Bathy data • Click Details… to See additional survey information (image on right).

  9. Survey Tab, Matrix Settings Summary of Matrix Settings • Edit: • Auto Cell Size: best fit to get 25 - 50 Points / Cell. • Enter Cell Size: in work units. Cells are square • Auto Cloud Size: ~250,000 Points / Cloud Section. • Enter Cloud Size: For Square Sections. • Auto Size to Data: Fit MTX to Survey. • Rotate to Survey Line: Align MTX with First Survey Line. • Use HYPACK MTX File: Cell Settings From MTX File.

  10. Survey Tab, Auto Processing • Auto Stage 2 Goes Directly to Depth Editing. Select option after loading files. • No Stop at Raw Data Stage. • Apply Filters: Automatically Applies Position, Tide and Depth Filters. • POSPac and True Heave Adjustments: Automatically Applies Applanix Post Processing files. • Note: if using this option, edits from Phase 1 can still be performed

  11. Read Parameters, File List • The File List is Active in Corrections, Devices and Processing Tabs. • Select Survey Files First, Apply Settings Second. Order is Important! • Example 1: A Single Tide File for the Entire Survey • Select All Survey Files, Then Open the Tide File. • Example 2: Survey Requires Tide Files 1 and 2. • Select Survey Files That Use the 1st Tide File Then Open TIDEFILE1.TID • Select Survey Files That Use the 2nd Tide File Then Open TIDEFILE2.TID

  12. Corrections Tab, Tides Corrections are Applied to Selected Survey File(s) • Set Correction: To Use This, Check the Box and Enter a Correction Value for the Entire File. Set to 0.0 to remove tides • TID File: Select a TID File. • X: Remove TID File. • Priority – MBMAX64 Will Never Double Correct for Tide: • Set Correction. • TID File. • Tide Data From Survey File.

  13. Corrections Tab, Sound Vel. Corrections are Applied to Selected Survey File(s) • VEL File: Select One or More VEL (SV Profile) Files. • X: Remove VEL File. • Echosounder Setting is Not Required for Multibeam. • Enter Cast Times for Multiple Files • Time Interpolation is Used For Corrections.

  14. Corrections Tab, Draft Corrections are Applied to Selected Survey File(s) • Set Correction: To Use This, Check the Box and Enter a Squat and Settlement Correction Value for the Entire File. • Priority: • Set Correction. • Draft Data From Survey File.

Device Tab, Summary • One Page Summary of Device Selections and Offsets. • Use Edit… Buttons to Make Changes. • Patch Test Offsets for each file (values for dual head system when applicable) Settings are Applied to Selected Survey File(s) • Alternate Offsets Method Override Settings Found in Survey Files • Device Selections and Offsets • Load and Save Configuration: • Load Offsets From Boat Config. File • Option to always use this file

  16. Devices and Offsets • Use Drop Down Lists to Select Devices. • Enter Relevant Offsets. • If using RTK Tides, enable setting Settings are Applied to Selected Survey File(s) MRU adjustments (if needed)

  17. Patch Test Offsets Settings are Applied to Selected Survey File(s) • Enter Patch Test Results: • Sonar – Yaw, Pitch and Roll. • Heads 1 and 2 if Dual Head System. • GPS Latency.

Processing Tab, Heave • Summary of Settings Used For Heave Correction. • Click Heave… to Change. • Applied to Selected Survey File(s). • Use RTK Tide Heave: Ignore MRU Heave. • Use MRU Heave: Heave Correction From MRU. • Correct Induced Heave: Required When MRU is Not Mounted at Boat Reference. • Remove Heave Drift: Apply Averaging to “Fix” Heave Drift. • Avoid Double Heave: When RTK Tide and MRU Both Measure Heave. • Average to Remove Heave: Use Averaging to Remove Heave From RTK Tide. • Merge Tides With Heave: Use Heave to Fill Gaps Between RTK Tide Points.

Processing Tab, Sonar • Summary of Sonar Processing. • Click Sonar… to Change. • Applied to Selected Survey File(s). • Sonar ID: Used by Geocoder. • Adjust SVP Every Ping: Set Top of Profile Using SV From Sonar. • Ray Tracing: Corrections For Ray Path Through Water. • Line Method: Fast. Best For Shallow Water. • Arc Method: Best For Deep Water. • Auto Select: Program Decides Which Method is Appropriate. • Presort: Non-intuitive Data Thinning. Removes Selected Percentage of Pings. (better to use other methods)

Left Panel – Selection Tools Fast Easy Manual Editing (Once You Get the Hang of It) • Three Selection Tools • Lasso: Free Form Border Selects Points. • Block: Block Rectangle Selects Points. • Line: Select Points Above or Below the Line. • Fast Delete • Checked: Deletes Selected Points Immediately. • Unchecked: Requires Delete Button or Keyboard Delete. • Undo Fixes Mistakes. • Inside / Outside: For Lasso and Block Selection. • Above / Below: For Line Selection. • Use Selection For • Delete Selection. • Filter and Undelete Selection. • Golden Soundings Make Editing Easier: Shift+Left Click in Edit Windows to Toggle Between Selection Tool and Rotate / Pan.

  28. Color Settings in Stage 1 • Color by File: Positions (and Depths in Stage 2). • Color by GPS Mode: Positions and RTK Tides. • Cycles Through Seven Colors Then Repeats. Position Colors by File. Position Colors by GPS Mode Over Black Background.

  29. Stage 1 Filters Use Edit Menu or Toolbar to Setup Filters. • Basic Tab: • Speed Over Ground: Filter on Boat Speed. Good For Removing Large Position Spikes. • GPS Tab: • Filter Based on Status From GPS. • Example: • Require GPS Mode 4 or 5 For Positions. • Require Mode 4 For Tides. • Require 5 Satellites for Either.

Apply the Filters Two Ways To Apply The Filters • Actions Tab • Filter All or Selected Files: Depends on the File List. • Reset All: If You Can’t Remember Which Filters are Enabled. • Count: Number of Points Deleted. • Survey Window • Preview: Yellow X’s Show Points Outside Limits. • Filter Button: Apply Filters. • With Selection: Filters Selected Points Only. • Without Selection: Filters Entire Window.

  31. Apply the Filters RTK Tide Filtering With Preview • Use Heave/Tide Editor. View Menu or Left Panel. • Filter Button: Same Selection Rules as Position Filtering. • Color by GPS Mode If It Is Helpful. Toolbar Lights Up If Manual Update Mode. Click It To Update RTK Tides.

Editing Positions Set radial button to Tracklines Manual Editing: Point by Point or Selection Tool. • Point by Point: Very Simple. • Left Click Position Spike. • Delete Button or Keyboard Delete to Remove. • Using a Selection Tool: • Choose Lasso, Block or Line Selection From Toolbar. • Select Points to Remove. • Fast Delete: • Checked: Points Are Deleted Immediately. • Unchecked: After Selection, Use Delete Button or Keyboard Delete.

  33. Edit Positions by Speed Use Speed Editor. View Menu or Left Panel. • Delete Point by Point or Selection. • Selection: • Line Selection Can Be Useful in the Speed Editor. • Remember to Select Above or Below. • You Can Use Keyboard “A” and “B” Keys.

View Menu or Left Panel. • Edit Window: • Shows Corrected and/or Raw Data. • Choose What You Want to See. • Auto / Manual Scale Options. • Delete Point by Point or Selection. • Selection: Make Sure Only Tide is Shown. We’re Editing Tide, Not Heave or Draft. • Update Tides: • No Need to Update Every Edit. • Finish Tide Editing Then Update.

  35. Review MRU and Heading Use HPR Editor. View Menu or Left Panel. • Shows File List Selected Files. Can display one or all files in session • Quick Review Of All Files. • Auto / Manual Scale For Pitch and Roll. • Edit Point by Point or Selection if needed

  36. Sound Velocity Review and Edit Use SV Editor. View Menu or Left Panel. • Sensor: • Delete SV Spikes if Needed. • Automatically Removes Soundings associated with that SV point. • SVP: • Review Only. • Shows Interpolation if Multiple SV Profiles.

Stage 1 Tools Menu • Tide Adjustments • Centerline Method: Interpolate Based On Distance Along Centerline. • 3 Point Method: Interpolate Between 3 Tide Stations. • Offset: Add an Offset. • Invert: Invert Tide Values. • Heave Adjustments • POS/MV True Heave: Replaces Raw Heave With Delayed Heave. • F180 Iheave: Replaces Raw Heave With Delayed Heave. • Remove Heave Drift: Simple Averaging Method to Remove Drift. • Position and RTK Tides • HYPACK RAW File: Replace RTK Tide (and Positions) Using WGS84 Latitude, Longitude and Elevation From HYPACK Raw Files. • POSPac: Replace RTK Tide and Positions Using Applanix Post Processing.

POS/MV True Heave Adjustments Use Heave Adjustments, POS/MV True Heave. • Open One or More True Heave Files. • Enter Offset, Local to UTC Time. • Use Adjust Button to Replace Heave. • True Heave vs. Raw Heave in Heave / Tide Editor • True Heave in Blue. • Raw Heave in Red. • True Heave is Correct. • What Does That Say About Raw Heave? It’s not always right

  39. HYPACK RAW File Adjustments Use Tools Menu, HYPACK Raw File Adjustments. • Mainly to Recalculate RTK Tides. Adjusts Positions as Well. • Use Positions From RAW File: Select Device, Enter Offsets Then Adjust X, Y. • Recalculate Positions Based on Project Geodesy: • Starts with WGS84 Position From the RAW File. • Recalculates X, Y Using Current Geodetic Parameters. • Recalculate RTK Tides: • Starts with WGS84 Position and Ellipsoid Elevation From the RAW File. • Recalculates RTK Tide Using Current Geodetic Parameters, KTD, VDatum, etc.

POSPac Adjustments Use Tools Menu, POSPac Adjustments. • Make Sure Geodetic Parameters are Right. • Open a POSPac File: *.OUT. • Select Data To Replace • Positions. • RTK Tides. • Heading. • Pitch and Roll. • POSPacDoes Not Replace Heave. • Click Adjust to Replace Data. Navigation and Tide Devices are Replaced With “POSPAC”.

  41. RTK Tides vs. MRU Heave Use Heave / Tide Editor. • Show: • Raw Data, Heave: MRU Data. • Raw Data, Tide: GPS Data. • Correction, Heave: True Heave Data. • Manual Scaling: If Needed for Proper Overlay. • Invert Heave For Display: Change Sign of Heave Correction to Match Tide Correction.

Stage 2, Depth Editing Use File Menu or Button • Progress Indicator: Beam Calculations May Take a While. • Stage 2 Enables • Depth Editors. • Depth Filters. • Matrix • Filled Using Selection in the Top Panel. • Selection May be Changed at Any Time. • Stage 1 Editing: Still Possible to make changes to sensor offsets, tide, SV, navigation, etc.

View Options and Lighting Use View Menu or Right Click Popup Menu. • Normal Dot Size / Line Width: For Edit Windows. • Project Level: For Depth Level in Profile Window and Shoal Color Coding. • Target Radius: For HYPACK Target Drawing. • Depth / Elevation Mode: For XYZ Files. • Draw Using Cell Center: May Improve Graphics in the Survey Window. • Lock in 2D: Prevents Mouse From Tilting Model Display. • Reload HYPACK Charts: Update With Latest HYPACK Settings. • Light Controls: Location of the Light Source. • Inclination: Vertical Angle. • Rotation: Direction. • The Moon: Click Here to Set the Location.

  44. Color Settings Use View Menu, Right Click Popup Menu or Toolbar. • Palette for Depth Colors. Select: • A Predefined MBMAX Palette. • Palette From HYPACK Color API. • Shoal Colors. Red = Above, Green = Below Project Level. • Project Level: For Shoal Palette. • Color By: How Soundings Are Color Coded. Many Options – Depth, Sonar Head, Beam Angle, etc. • Auto Scale Z Range: Auto or Manual Z Limits. • TVU/THU: Red = Above, Green = Below Maximum. • Matrix, Auto Scale: For Matrix Statistics • Count Colors: Points Per Cell. • Sigma Colors: Cell Standard Deviation. • Z Range Colors: Cell Vertical Range.

  45. Custom Feature Colors Use Custom Colors Button in Color Settings • Use This To Define Your Own Colors for many options in MBMAX.

Beam Flagging • Point Flags: Flag Questionable Soundings for Further Exam. • Also Position, RTK Tide and MRU Points. • Set / Reset in Edit Windows Using Flag Button. • Find in Search, Compare in Multiple Edit Windows. • Saved in HS2 Files. • Checked Beams: Flag Beams That Have Been Checked (Inspected) in Edit Windows. • Check / Uncheck in Edit Windows Using Check Button. • Cloud, Profile, Cell and Survey Windows. • Find Unchecked in Search. • Saved in HS2 Files. • Golden Soundings: Features Found in Editing. • Set / Reset in Edit Window Using the Gold Button. • Find Golden Soundings in Search. • Golden Soundings Are Not Deleted. • Saved in HS2 Files.

  47. Targets • Overlay HYPACK Target Files. • Use File Menu, Overlay Target File. • Find Targets in Search. • Show Targets in Survey Window. Mark New Targets in Editing With the F5 Key.

Depth Filters - Basic • Min / Max Depth or Elevation: Clearly a Useful Filter. • Beam Angle Limits: • Minimum: For Interferometry – Weakest Beams Close to Nadir. • Maximum: For Beam Formers – Weakest Beams Far From Nadir. • Horizontal Offset Limits: works nicely when swath isn’t changing due to depth.

  49. Depth Filters - Sweep • Over / Under Filter: • Called “Filter Overhang and Undercut Topography” in MBMAX 32. - Very Useful and Safe. • Minimum Beam Quality: • For Systems That Quality Code Beams. • Example: Seabat “3” Code is Best. • Remove Beams: List of Beams Know to be Bad. • Median: • Replaces MBMAX 32 Spike Filter. • This is Better. Uses Beams Along and Across Track. • Savitsky – Golay: Low Pass Filter Based on Curve Fitting. • Gate Size: Allowable Distance From Curve. • Order: Flexibility of Curve. 2 = Straight Line. • Window Size: Number of Soundings Used in Curve Fit.

  50. Depth Filters - Matrix • Select a Statistic to Represent Each Cell. Median Works Well. • Select Limits Above and/or Below. • Be Careful not to Over Filter. • Use Search to Locate Marginal Soundings, Then You Decide. Matrix Filters in the Cell Window.
