  1. DATABASES

  2. WHY G.P's USE DATABASES There are a number of persuasive reasons. First, though, let’s cover the most common question: What exactly is a database? It’s nothing more than a collection of information. Period. There are good and bad databases. Good ones allow you to extract useful information from them. Bad ones make extraction difficult.

  3. WHY G.P's USE DATABASES G.P’s use them for the following reasons; • Databases can store very large numbers of records very efficiently. It is very easy and quick to find information. • It is easy to add new data and to edit or delete old data. • Data can be searched easily (e.g., 'find all boys who play music at H.A.B.S). • Data can be sorted easily, for example into Alphabetical order.

  4. WHY G.P's USE DATABASES • Data can be taken into other applications, for example a mail-merge letter to a customer saying that an MOT test is due. • More than one computer can access the same database at the same time - multi-access. This can be done through the Internet as well. • Security may be better than in paper files. But can be hacked in by fraudsters. • Information can also be easily backed up and transferred to other computers.

  5. WHY G.P's USE DATABASES These databases have a strong formal structure that is normally easy to see. Take the example below:- The column headings in RED are fields. The rows in BLUE are records, with one record per person. One record has one entry in every field. They're useful for storing data that can easily fit into a rigid structure, like a class list or an address book.

  6. WHY G.P's USE DATABASES This is how a typical database could look like.

  7. disadvantages • hackers could hack in and change info. • Serious injuries could occur even death • Addresses can be leaked to people who misuse them.
