  2. Who was immigrating?? • Mostly men immigrated in the beginning, then entire families migrated. • Irish people immigrated due to the famines in Ireland. • 37,000 Irish catholic people migrated to Boston, MA in 1947.

  3. Irish Immigrants • They were referred to as the “Famine Irish” • Immigrated because of the potato famine. • A deadly type of fungus destroyed all of the potato crop for the next two years in Ireland. • In 1847 over 37,000 Irish catholic people arrived by land and sea in Boston, MA.

  4. German Immigrants • Migrated in search of an easier life. • Migrated to get away from being attacked by other country’s army’s. • Political disorder was a main reason for immigration.

  5. How did they migrate? • Irish and German immigrants migrated by both land and sea. • They took boats and ships carrying hundreds of people each. • They traveled in groups over land. Rode on horseback. • Map

  6. The aftermath….. • The population was greatly effected by the immigration. Ireland went from having 8.2 million people to 6.6 million in less than 10 years. • Germany was equally effected by this, the population in Germany was affected at about the same rate as in Ireland.
